VIDYĀ II : A deity. This deity is worshipped as the deity of three Vedas which are the most important of the reli- gious or Vedic literature. Mention is made about this deity in the preface of Ṛgvedabhāṣya by Sāyaṇa, as follows.

Once Vidyā approached a Brahmin and said “I am your wealth. Your duty is to impart me to disciples who are pure, celibate, law-abiding and active, and who pro- tect the treasure. I hate disciples who are jealous.”

Vidyā in the Atharvaveda[१] and later[२] denotes ‘knowledge,’ especially that of the three Vedas, which are called the trayī vidyā, ‘the threefold knowledge,’ as early as the Taittirīya Brāhmaṇa.[३] In a more special sense Vidyā occurs in lists of objects of study in the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa.[४] What exactly the expression here means is uncertain: Sāyaṇa[५] suggests the philosophic systems; Geldner[६] the first Brāhmaṇas; and Eggeling,[७] more probably, special sciences like the Sarpavidyā or the Viṣavidyā.
