आर्द्रा, स्त्री, (आर्द्र + टाप् ।) अश्विन्यादिसप्तविंशति- नक्षत्रान्तर्गतषष्ठनक्षत्रं । अस्य रूपं । पद्माकृत्यु- ज्ज्वलैकतारकामयं । अस्या अधिष्ठात्री देवता शिवः । इति कालिदासः ॥ मणितुल्यैकतारात्मकं । इति केचित् ॥ तत्र जातफलं । “क्षुधाधिको रुक्मशरीरकान्तिः कलिप्रियः कोपयुतोऽविनीतः । प्रमूतिकाले च भवेत् किलार्द्रा नचार्द्रचेताः शरणागतेऽपि” । इति कोष्ठीप्रदीपः ॥

Nārada told Devakī (13. 63. 2-4) that if one gave as a gift, after fasting, kṛsara mixed with sesamum oil, under the constellation Ārdrā one could get over difficulties and cross mountains having edges as sharp as a razor (ārdrāyāṁ kṛsaraṁ dattvā tailamiśram upoṣitaḥ/naras tarati durgāṇi kṣuradhārāṁś ca parvatān) 13. 63. 8; Yama told Śaśabindu (13. 89. 1) that by offering a śrāddha (which is kāmya) under Ārdrā one could perform terrible deeds (krūrakarmā… mānavo bhavet) 13. 89. 3.

4. Ārdrā, ‘moist,’ is the name of the brilliant star, Orionis. But the names by which it is styled, in the plural as Ārdrās in the Śāṅkhāyana Gṛhya Sūtra[१] and the Nakṣatrakalpa,[२] and in the dual as Bāhū, in the Taittirīya Brāhmaṇa,[३] point to a constellation of two or more stars, and it may be noted[४] that the corresponding Chinese Sieou includes the seven brilliant stars composing the shoulders, the belt, and the knees of Orion.
