आश्रमः, पुं, क्ली, (आङ् + श्रम + घञ् ।) शास्त्रोक्त- धर्म्मविशेषः । आश्राम्यन्ति स्वं स्वं तपश्चरन्त्यत्र । स चतुर्विधः । ब्रह्मचर्य्यं १ गार्हस्थ्यं २ वानप्रस्थ्यं ३ सन्न्यासः ४ । इति स्मृतिः ॥ ब्रह्मचारी । गृही । वानप्रस्थः । भिक्षुः । इत्यमरः ॥ मुनीनां वास- स्थानं । वनं । मठः । इति मेदिनी ॥ (कलियुगे तु ब्रह्मचर्य्यवानप्रस्थौ न स्तः केवलं गृहस्थभिक्षुका- श्रमावेव, यदुक्तं । महानिर्व्वाणतन्त्रे । “गार्हस्थो भैक्षुकश्चैव आश्रमौ द्वौ कलौ युगे” । रघुवंशे, १ । ४८ । “स दुष्प्रापयशाः प्रापदाश्रमं श्रान्तवाहनः” ।)

आश्रमः [āśramḥ] मम् [mam], मम् [आ-श्रम् आधारे घञ् वृद्धयभावः]
A hermitage, hut, cell, dwelling or abode of ascetics; शरणान्यशरण्यानि आश्रमाणि कृतानि नः Rām.7.6.5.
A stage, order, or period of the (religious) life of a Brāhmaṇa (These are four: ब्रह्मचर्य the life of a student; गार्हस्थ्य the life of a house-holder; वानप्रस्थ the life of an anchorite or hermit, and संन्यास the life of a Bhikṣu or beggar. Kṣatriyas (and Vśiyas also) can enter, upon the first three Āśramas; cf. Ś.7.18; V.5; (according to some authorities they can enter the fourth also; cf. स किलाश्रममन्त्यमाश्रितः R.8.14; पूर्वाश्रमः Ku.5.5.

Description: Holy, having holy characteristics (puṇya) 9. 53. 2, 9, (puṇyalakṣaṇa) 9. 53. 3; heavenly (divya) 9. 53. 1; excellent, excellent āśrama (pravara) 9. 53. 3, (āśramavara) 9. 53. 3; extensive (sumahant) 9. 53. 1; having Madhūka, Āmra, Plakṣa, Nyagrodha, Ciribilva, Panasa and Arjuna trees in very large number (madhūkāmravanopetaṁ plakṣanyagrodhasaṁkulam/ciribilvayutaṁ puṇyaṁ panasārjunasaṁkulam//) 9. 53. 2.
C. Epic event: Balarāma visited it after seeing Kurukṣetra and asked the sages whose āśrama it was; Balarāma, after listening to their account, bowed down to them and went up the Himavant mountain 9. 53. 1, 3, 9.
D. Past event: The sages when asked by Balarāma whose āśrama it was told him to whom the āśrama formerly belonged (yasyāyaṁ pūrvam āśramaḥ) 9. 53. 4:
(1) Formerly Viṣṇu practised in the āśrama the best austerities and performed according to rites all the ancient sacrifices (atra viṣṇuḥ purā devas taptavāṁs tapa uttamam/atrāsya vidhivad yajñāḥ sarve vṛttāḥ sanātanāḥ) 9. 53. 5;
(2) The daughter of Śāṇḍilya who observed chastity since her maidenhood (kaumārabrahmacāriṇī) practised austerities there; she enjoyed in the āśrama the fruit of the Aśvamedha sacrifice (bhuktvāśrame 'śvamedhasya phalam) and then taking recourse to yoga went to heaven (yogayuktā divaṁ yātā; sā tu prāpya paraṁ yogaṁ gatā svargam) 9. 53. 6-8.
