पृष्ठभागोऽयं यन्त्रेण केनचित् काले काले मार्जयित्वा यथास्रोतः परिवर्तयिष्यते। तेन मा भूदत्र शोधनसम्भ्रमः। सज्जनैः मूलमेव शोध्यताम्।

उपनयः, पुं, (उप समीपे नीयते येन कर्म्मणा । उप + नी + अच् ।) उपनयनम् । इति हेमचन्द्रः ॥ (“गृह्योक्तकर्म्मणा येन समीपं नीयते गुरोः । बालो वेदाय तद्योगात् बालस्योपनयं विदुः” ॥ इति स्मृतिः । भावे + अच् । प्रापणम् । यथा, महाभारते ३ । २ । २४ । “मानमस्य प्रियाख्यानैः सम्भोगोपनयैर्नृणाम्” ॥ न्यायमते यो यो धूमवान् स सवह्निमान् अयमपि तथेत्यादिरूपः न्यायावयवभेदः ॥)

उपनयः [upanayḥ], 1 Bringing near, fetching.

Gaining, attaining, procuring. नान्यं तवाङ्घ्रयुपनयादपवर्गमूर्तेः क्षेमं जनस्य परितो भिय ईश विद्मः Bhāg.12.8.43.

Employing

Investiture with the sacred thread, initiation into sacred study, handing a youth of the first three castes to a teacher; गृह्योक्तकर्मणा येन समीपं नीयते गुरोः । बालो वेदाय तद्योगात् बालस्योपनयं विदुः ॥ (By this ceremony spiritual birth is conferred upon the youth, and he becomes a द्विजन्मन्; the ages at which the ceremony may be performed by the three castes are respectively 8-16, 11-22 and 12-24; (see Ms.2.36-38; of what materials &c. the cords should be, is mentioned in 2.41-46).
