गजः, पुं, (गजति मदेन मत्तो भवतीति । गज् + अच् ।) हस्ती । इत्यमरः । २ । ८ । ३४ ॥ (स तु त्रिविधः । यथाह शब्दार्थचिन्तामणिः । “भद्रो मन्दो मृगश्चैव विज्ञेयास्त्रिविघा गजाः ॥” अस्य लक्षणादिकं यथा, वृहत्संहितायां ६७ अध्याये । “मध्वाभदन्ताः सुविभक्तदेहा न चोपदिग्धाश्च कृशाः क्षमाश्च । गात्रैः समैश्चापसमानवंशा वराहतुल्यैर्जघनैश्च भद्राः ॥ औपधपाकार्थगर्त्तविशेषः । यथा, -- “हस्तप्रमाणगर्त्तो यः पुटः स तु गजाह्वयः । इत्थं चारत्निके कुण्डे पुटो वाराह उच्यते ॥” इति वैद्यकप्रयोगामृतम् ॥ (असुरविशेषः । स तु महिषासुरपुत्त्रः । यथा, काशीखण्डे । ६८ । ३ । “महिषासुरपुत्त्रोऽसौ समायाति गजासुरः । प्रमथन् प्रमथान् सर्व्वान् निजवीर्य्यमदोद्धतः ॥”)
