Out of the navel of विष्णु came ब्रह्मा who created Asuras one of whom was Gaya, १२५ yojanas in length and ६० in breadth; a वैष्नव; performed तपस् at कोलाहल hill for १००० of years; फलकम्:F1: फलकम्:/F all gods went to विष्णु. गयासुर with whom विष्णु was pleased was granted his request, to be the best of all; Yamapuri became vacant; all went to ब्रह्मा and he went to विष्णु; on the latter's advice ब्रह्मा went to गया and wanted to perform याग on his body; a true devotee, Gaya agreed readily. But finding him un- stable ब्रह्मा ordered Dharma to place a stone on his head and the devas to stand to maintain balance; विष्नु was again approached who gave his मूर्ति and finding Gaya still un- stable गदाधर himself took his stand and made the stone motionless. Pleased, विष्णु gave him what he desired. It was that they should all live there and that the people who did rites there must reach Brahmaloka. See गया ti1rtham. वा. १०५. 5-१३. ch. १०६.
