पृष्ठभागोऽयं यन्त्रेण केनचित् काले काले मार्जयित्वा यथास्रोतः परिवर्तयिष्यते। तेन मा भूदत्र शोधनसम्भ्रमः। सज्जनैः मूलमेव शोध्यताम्।

(I)--a son of Atri and an younger brother of दत्तात्रेय; फलकम्:F1:  भा. IV. 1. १५; Br. III. 8. ८२; वा. ७०. ७६.फलकम्:/F an अम्श of शिव; फलकम्:F2:  भा. IV. 1. ३३.फलकम्:/F appeared before अम्बरीष who was about to break his द्वादसि fast; agreed to accept his hospitality, went to the river for bath and tarried there; finding the मुहूर्त for पारण (break-fast) drawing to a close, the king broke his fast with some water. Coming to know of this on his return, the sage produced a flaming spirit to attack him. But Hari's चक्र burnt it down and turned towards the sage, who ran for succour to ब्रह्मा, शिव and विष्णु. All of them were unable to help; but Hari advised him to meet अम्बरीष and apologise to him. फलकम्:F3:  Ib. IX. 4. ३५-71.फलकम्:/F This he did and was set at liberty. After partaking the meals with him, he returned to Brahmaloka; फलकम्:F4:  Ib. IX. 5. 1-२२.फलकम्:/F blessed पृथ with secret मन्त्रस् to summon gods. फलकम्:F5:  Ib. IX. २४. ३२; XI. 1. १२.फलकम्:/F Through him Duryodhana planned to destroy the पाण्डवस् by inciting him to go to them and ask for a feast. But कृष्ण protected them on the occasion. फलकम्:F6:  Ib. I. १५. ११.फलकम्:/F In the course of his sojourn he met a विद्या- [page२-106+ २३] dhara maid with a garland given to her by the देवी; took it from her and presented it to Indra who put it on his elephant, who in turn threw it on the ground and trampled upon it.
