 पृष्ठभागोऽयं यन्त्रेण केनचित् काले काले मार्जयित्वा यथास्रोतः परिवर्तयिष्यते। तेन मा भूदत्र शोधनसम्भ्रमः। सज्जनैः मूलमेव शोध्यताम्। |
देवापिः, पुं, प्रतीपराज्ञः पुत्त्रः । स सुमेरुसमीपे कलापग्रामे योगी भूत्वा आस्ते स कलौ लुप्तं चन्द्रवंशं पुनः सत्ययुगे भावयिष्यति । इति श्रीभागवतम् ॥ स च कुष्ठी प्रजाभिरपध्यातः । इति मत्स्यपुराणम् ॥ (यथा, महाभारते । १ । ९५ । ४४--४५ । “प्रतिश्रवसः प्रतीपः प्रतीपः खलु शैव्यामुपयेमे सुनन्दां नाम तस्यां पुत्त्रानुत्पादयामास देवापिं शान्तनुं बाह्वीकञ्चेति । देवापिः खलु बाल एवा- रण्यं विवेश शान्तनुस्तु महीपालो बभूव ॥” वैदिकमते तु अयं ऋष्टिषेणस्य पुत्त्रः । यथा, निरुक्ते । २ । १० । “देवापिश्चार्ष्टिषेणः शन्तनुश्च कौरव्यौ भ्रातरौ बभूवतुः । स शन्तनुः कनीयानभिषेचयाञ्चक्रे देवापिस्तपः प्रतिपेदे । ततः शन्तनो राज्ये द्वादशं वर्षाणि देवो न ववर्ष । तमूचुः ब्राह्मणा अधर्म्मस्त्वया चरितो ज्येष्ठं भ्रातरमन्तरित्याभि- षेचितं तस्मात् ते देवो न वर्षतीति । स शन्तनु- र्देवापिं शिशिक्ष राज्येन । तमुवाच देवापिः पुरोहितस्तेऽसानि याजयानि च त्वेति । तस्यै तद्वर्षकामसूक्तम् ॥” तथा च ऋग्वेदे । १० । ९८ । ५ । “आर्ष्टिषेणो होत्रमृषिर्निषीदन् देवापिर्देव- सुमतिं चिकित्वान् ॥”)

(I)--a son of प्रतीप and brother of शन्तनु; renounced the home and turned मुनि; requested by शन्तनु to take up the throne; he spoke impeaching the Vedas. He took to yoga living in कलापग्राम. He was to establish the Lunar race in the कृत Yuga; Purohita of the Devas; फलकम्:F1: भा. IX. २२. १२-18; XII. 2. ३७; वा. ९९. २३४.फलकम्:/F un- acceptable to the people as he suffered from leprosy. फलकम्:F2: M. ५०. ३९-41; २७३. ५६.फलकम्:/F A राजऋषि and a gotrapravartaka of the Treta yuga फलकम्:F3: वा. ३२. ३९.फलकम्:/F and a Paurava.
(II)--a Paurava king who continues to live in Kali in कलापग्राम; क्षत्रप्रणेतार in the २४थ् Catur- yuga. Originator of क्षत्रियस् in the कृत. फलकम्:F1: वा. ९९. ४३७-8; Vi. IV. २४-118.फलकम्:/F A son of Pra- तीप. Even as a child retired to forest. The famine in his brother Santanu's (s.v) kingdom was said to be due to his elder brother देवापि having been passed over for succes- sion. DEVĀPI I : A king born in the lunar dynasty.
Genealogy. Descended from Viṣṇu thus:--Atri--Candra-- Budha--Purūravas--Āyus--Nahuṣa--Yayāti--Pūru-- Janame jaya--Prācinvān--Pravīra--Namasyu-- Vītabhaya--Śuṇḍu--Bahuvidha--Saṁyāti--Raho- vādi--Raudrāśva--Matināra--Santurodha--Duṣyanta-- Bharata--Suhotra--Suhotā--Gala--Garda--Suketu-- Bṛhatkṣetra--Hasti--Ajamīḍha--Ṛkṣa--Saṁvaraṇa-- Kuru--Jahnu--Suratha--Viḍūratha--Śārvabha- uma--Jayatsena--Avyaya--Bhāvuka--Cakroddhata-- Devātithi--Ṛkṣa--Bhīma--Pratīca--Pratīpa--Devāpi. Pratīpa had three sons named Devāpi, Śantanu and Bālhīka. Śantanu succeeded Pratīpa as king as his elder brother had taken to sannyāsa as a boy. (Ādi Parva, Chapter 94, Verse 61).
2) Devāpi resorted to the forest. Devāpi was the best loved by his father and was the apple of the eyes of his subjects. But he was suffering from skin disease. So, when Pratīpa wanted to crown him king the people objected. Their argument was that God would not be pleased if a man with skin disease became king. The king yielded to their wishes and crowned Śantanu as his successor. The youngest brother Bālhīka went and stayed in his mother's house. Devāpi who was disappoint ed that he was denied the crown, left for the forest and spent the rest of his life in penance. (Udyoga Parva, Chapter 149).
His end. Devāpi did tapas at the Pṛthūdaka tīrtha in the interior of Kurukṣetra and ultimately attained salvation. (Śalya Parva, Chapter 39, Verse 37).
