देविका, स्त्री, (दीव्यतीति । दिव + ण्वुल् । टापि अत इत्वम् ।) नदीविशेषः । इति शब्दरत्ना- वली ॥ तस्याः परिमाणं यथा, -- “अर्द्धयोजनविस्तारां पञ्चयोजनमायताम् । एतावद्देविकामाहुर्देवर्षिपरिसेविताम् ॥” इति पाद्मे भूमिखण्डम् ॥ (इयं हिमवत्पादनिःसृता । इति मत्स्यपुरा- णम् । ११३ । २१ ॥ अनया सह सरयूः सङ्गता । इति कालिकापुराणम् । २३ अः ॥ इयन्तु तीर्थस्थानानामन्यतमा । अत्र नरः स्नात्वा महादेवं समभ्यर्च्च्य यथाशक्ति चरुं निवेद्य च सर्व्वकामसमृद्धस्य यज्ञस्य फलं लभते । इति महाभारतम् । ३ । ८२ । ९९ ॥ इयं हि पीठ- स्थानानाम् अन्यतमा । अत्र भगवती नन्दिनी- रूपेण विराजते । यथा, देवीभागवते । ७ । ३० । ६९ । “शिवकुण्डे शुभानन्दा नन्दिनी देविकातटे ॥” युधिष्ठिरस्य पत्नीविशेषः । यथा, महाभारते । १ । ९५ । ७६ । “युधिष्ठिरस्तु गोवासनस्य शैव्यस्य देविकां नाम कन्यां स्वयंवरां लेभे । तस्यां पुत्त्रं जनयामास यौधेयं नाम ॥”) धुस्तूरः । इति भावप्रकाशः ॥ देवसम्बन्धिनि, त्रि ॥

Description: Holy (puṇyā) and frequented by divine sages (devarṣisevitā) 3. 80. 115; famous in the worlds (lokaviśrutā) 3. 80. 110; one of the rivers which are described as best rivers (saricchreṣṭhāḥ), most holy (puṇyatamāḥ) and auspicious (śivāḥ) 13. 134. 22; all rivers listed by Saṁjaya are described as mothers of the universe and very strong 6. 10. 35 (for citation see Atikṛṣṇā ).


C. Extent: Half a yojana wide and five yojanas long (ardhayojanavistārāṁ pañcayojanam āyatām/ etāvad devikām āhuḥ) 3. 80. 115.

(2) Devikā is one of the rivers who wait on Śiva for his bath (upasparśanahetos tvā samīpasthā upāsate) 13. 134. 12; these rivers were conversant with the duties of women (strīdharmakuśalāḥ) and hence were consulted and honoured by Umā before she expounded strīdharma to Śiva 13. 134. 19-20, 14, 25;

(3) Finds place in the Daivata-Ṛṣi-Vaṁśa 13. 151. 14 and in the Tīrthavaṁśa 13. 26. 3, 9.
