 पृष्ठभागोऽयं यन्त्रेण केनचित् काले काले मार्जयित्वा यथास्रोतः परिवर्तयिष्यते। तेन मा भूदत्र शोधनसम्भ्रमः। सज्जनैः मूलमेव शोध्यताम्। |
द्विविदः, पुं, वानरविशेषः । इति हेमचन्द्रः ॥ (अयं हि नरकासुरस्य मित्रम् । यथा, विष्णु- पुराणे । ५ । ३६ । २ । “नरकस्यासुरेन्द्रस्य देवपक्षविरोधिनः । सखाभवन्महावीर्य्यो द्विविदो नाम वानरः ॥” स तु बलरामेण हतः । यथा, तत्रैव । ५ । ३६ । २० । “ततो बलेन कोपेन मुष्ठिना मूर्द्ध्व्नि ताडितः । पपात रुधिरोद्गारी द्विविदः क्षीणजीवितः ॥” श्रीरामस्य सचिववानराणामन्यतमः । यथा, महाभारते । ३ । २७९ । २३ । “मैन्दश्च द्विविदश्चैव हनूमांश्चानिलात्मजः । जाम्बवानृक्षराजश्च सुग्रीवः सचिवाः स्मृताः ॥”) “समुद्रस्योत्तरे तीरे द्बिविदो नाम वानरः । ऐकाहिकज्वरं हन्ति तस्य नामानुकीर्त्तनात् ॥” इति ज्योतिषम् ॥

(I)--an Asura, and a friend of Kamsa; vanquished by कृष्ण. भा. III. 3. ११; X. 2. 1; ३६. ३५; Br. III. ७३. ९९; वा. ९८. १००.
(II)--a वानर friend of Naraka; a minister of सुग्रीव and brother of Mainda; wanted to avenge his friend's death; went about destroying आनर्तस् and cities belonging to कृष्ण and met राम at the Raivata hill. There he offended him by grinning, breaking his wine pot and insulting his fair companions. This resulted in battle in which after a bold stand Dvivida fell dead. भा. X. ६७. 2-२६; Br. III. 7. २४२. Vi. V. Ch. ३६ (whole).

Dvivida : m.: A monkey-chief.
One of the four councillors of Sugrīva 3. 264. 23; according to Tārā, wife of Vālin, they were all noble-minded (mahātman), intelligent (buddhimant), and very strong (mahābala) 3. 264. 24; one of the guardians of the army of monkeys of Rāma when it marched towards the southern ocean 3. 267. 19; he, with other monkey-chiefs, kept watch over the bodies of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa lying on the ground bound by the arrows of Indrajit 3. 273. 4; he, with others, applied water, sent by Kubera, to eyes so that they could see beings which had made themselves invisible 3. 273. 10-13; (in all the above references Dvivida is mentioned in the company of Mainda); Vidura informed Duryodhana that the monkey-chief (vānarendra) Dvivida hurled a shower of stones on Kṛṣṇa at the gate of Saubha and tried to arrest him with valiant efforts, but did not succeed 5. 128. 41-42.
