धेना, स्त्री, (धेन + टाप् । “टित्त्वेऽपि खच्येव ङीप् । इति हरदत्तोक्तेर्न ङीप् ।” इति केचित् ।) नदी । (दधातेर्लटः शानचि व्यत्य येन एत्वा- भ्यासलोपौ दधाना स्वमभिधेयं वर्षप्रदानेन लौकिकाय वा । यद्वा, धेट पाने ‘धेट इच्च’ इति नप्रत्ययः इकाराश्चान्तादेशः गुणः । धयन्ति तामिति धेना । पानमत्र स्वीकारः । यद्वा, आस्वादः । धीयते पीयते आस्वाद्यते वानेन धयन्ति प्राणमिति धेना ।” इति देवराजयज्वा । १ । ११ । ३९ ।) भारतीभेदः । इति हेमचन्द्रः ॥ (यथा, ऋग्वेदे । ३ । १ । ९ । “व्यस्य धारा असृजद्वि धेनाः ।” “धेना माध्यमिका वाचश्च विसृजति ।” इति तद्भाष्ये सायनः ॥)

Dhenā denotes a ‘milch cow,’[१] or in the plural, ‘draughts of milk.’[२] In two passages[३] Roth[४] takes the word to mean ‘mare,’ and in another the ‘team’ of Vāyu's chariot. Benfey,[५] on the other hand, renders it ‘lips’ in one passage,[६] with Sāyaṇa and with Durga's commentary on the Nirukta.[७] Geldner[८] assigns to the word the senses of ‘lips,’[९] ‘speech,’[१०] ‘cow,’[११] ‘beloved,’[१२] and ‘streams.’[१३](** 5) Rv. i. 2, 3.
