प्राणः, पुं, (प्राणिति जीवति बहुकालमिति । प्र + अन + अच् । प्राणित्यनेनेति करणे घञ् वा ।) ब्रह्मा । इति त्रिकाण्डशेषः ॥ हृन्मा- रुतः । (यदुक्तम् । “हृदिप्राणो गुदेऽपानः समानो नाभिसंस्थितः ॥”) वोलः । काव्यजीवः । अनिलः । बलम् । (यथा, हरिवंशे । ८६ । ३६ । “बाहुप्राणेन शूराणां समाजोत्सवसन्निधौ ॥”) पूरिते, त्रि । इति मेदिनी ॥ सूक्ष्मशरीरसम- ष्ट्युपहितचैतन्यम् ॥ प्राग्गमनवान् नासाग्रस्थान वर्त्ती वायुः । इति वेदान्तसारः ॥ तस्य कर्म्मबहिर्गमनम् । इति श्रीधरस्वामी ॥ तस्य रूपं स्थानानि च यथा, -- “इन्द्रनीलप्रतीकाशं प्राणरूपं प्रकीर्त्तितम् । आस्यनासिकयोर्म्मध्ये हृन्मध्ये नाभिमध्यगे ॥ प्राणालय इति प्राहुः पादाङ्गुष्ठेऽपि केचन ॥” इति योगार्णवः ॥ (यथा, महाभारते । १२ । ३२८ । ३५ । “प्राणिनां सर्व्वतो वायुश्चेष्टां वर्त्तयते पृथक् । प्राणनाच्चैव भूतानां प्राण इत्यभिधीयते ॥”) पञ्चप्राणविवरणं बहुवचनान्तप्राणशब्दे द्रष्ट व्यम् ॥ धातुः पुत्त्रः । यथा, -- “आयतिर्नियतिश्चैव मेरोः कन्ये महात्मनः । भार्य्ये धातृविधात्रोस्ते तयोर्जातौ सुतावुभौ ॥ प्राणश्चैव मृकण्डुश्च पिता मम महायशाः ॥” इति मार्कण्डेये रुद्रसर्गाध्यायः ॥ (धरपुत्त्रविशेषः । यथा, मत्स्यपुराणे । ५ । २३-२४ । “द्रविणो हव्यवाहश्च नरपुत्त्रावुभौ स्मृतौ । कल्यानिन्यां ततः प्राणो रमणः शिशिरोऽपि च ॥ मनोहरा धरात् पुत्त्रानवापाथ हरेः सुता ॥”)

प्राणः [prāṇḥ], 1 Breath, respiration.
The breath of life, vitality, life, vital air, principle of life (usually pl. in this sense, the Prāṇas being five; प्राण, अपान, समान, व्यान and उदान); प्राणैरुपक्रोशमलीमसैर्वा R.2.53;12.54; (हृदि प्राणो गुदे$पानः समानो नाभिसंस्थितः । उदानः कण्ठदेशस्थो व्यानः सर्वशरीरगः ॥).
The first of the five life-winds or vital airs (which has its seat in the lungs); अपाने जुह्वति प्राणं प्राणे$पानं तथापरे । प्राणापानगती रुद्ध्वा प्राणायाम- परायणाः ॥ Bg.4.29.
