मागधः, पुं, (मगधस्य तद्बंशस्यापत्यम् । “द्व्यञ्- मगधकलिङ्गसूरमसादण् ।” ४ । १ । १७० । इति । अण् ।) पाणिस्वनकः । इति महा- भारतम् ॥ वंशक्रमेण महत्त्ववेदिराजाग्रस्तुति- कारी । तत्पर्य्यायः । मधुकः २ वन्दी ३ स्तुति- पाठकः ४ । इत्यमरभरतौ । २ । ८ । ९७ । तस्योत्पत्तिर्यथा, -- ततोऽस्य दक्षिणं हस्तं ममन्थुस्ते तदा द्विजाः । मथ्यमाने च तत्राभूत् पृथुर्वैण्यः प्रतापवान् ॥ तस्य वै जातमात्रस्य यज्ञे पैतामहे शुभे । सूतः सूत्यां समुत्पन्नः सौत्येऽहनि महामते ! ॥ तस्मिन्नेव महायज्ञे जज्ञे प्राज्ञोऽथ मागधः । प्रोक्तौ तदा मुनिवरैस्तावुभौ सूतमागधौ ॥ स्तूयतामेष नृपतिः पृथुर्वैण्यः प्रतापवान् ।” सूत्यामिति सूतिरभिषूतिः अभिषूयते कण्ड्यते सोमोऽस्यामिति सूतिः सोमाभिषवभूमिस्त- स्याम् । सौत्येऽहनि तस्मिन्नेव दिने । इति विष्णुपुराणे १ अंशे ४१ अध्यायस्तट्टीका च ॥ (यथा, महाभारते । १३ । ४८ । १२ । “वन्दी तु जायते वैश्यान्मागधो वाक्य- जीवनः ।”) वर्णसङ्करजातिविशेषः । (यथा, मानवे । १० । ११ । “क्षत्त्रियाद्विप्रकन्यायां सूतो भवति जातितः । वैश्यान्मागधवैदेहौ राजविप्राङ्गनासुतौ ॥”) स तु क्षत्त्रियायां वैश्याज्जातः । भाट् इति ख्यातः । मगधेषु भवो मागधः ष्णः इत्यमर- भरतौ । २ । १० । २ । जरासन्धराजः । तथा, -- “मागधो न च हन्तव्यो भूयः कर्त्ता बलोद्यमम् ।” इति श्रीभागवते १० स्कन्धः ॥ शुक्लजीरकः । मगधदेशोद्भवे त्रि । इति मेदिनी । मे, ३४ ॥ (यथा, महाभारते । ६ । ९ । ४९ । “अन्ध्राश्च बहवो राजन्नन्तर्गिर्य्यास्तथैव च । बहिर्गिर्य्याङ्गमलदा मागधा मालवाज्जटाः ॥”)

मागध¦ mfn. (-धः-धी-धं) Belonging to, or produced in the province of Magad'ha or south Behar. m. (-धः)
1. A bard, a minstrel, whose duty it is, to recite the praises of sovereigns, their genealogy, and the deeds of their ancestors, in their presence; and to attend oni the march of an army, and animate the soldiers by martial songs: the minstrel forms a particular caste, said to spring from a Vaisya father, and Kshetriya mother; in mythology, they are said to have been created at once by the will of S4IVA; under the name of Bhauts, they are still numerous in the west of Inda where they are a privileged tribe.
