पृष्ठभागोऽयं यन्त्रेण केनचित् काले काले मार्जयित्वा यथास्रोतः परिवर्तयिष्यते। तेन मा भूदत्र शोधनसम्भ्रमः। सज्जनैः मूलमेव शोध्यताम्।

शाकलः, पुं, शकलेन प्रोक्तमधीयते शाक- लास्तेषां सङ्घोऽङ्को घोषो वा । “शाकलाद्वा ।” ४ । ३ । १२८ । इति अण् । परम्परासम्बन्धोऽङ्कः । इति सिद्धान्तकौमुदी ॥ (द्बीपविशेषः । यथा, महाभारते । २ । २६ । ६ । “शाकलद्वीपवासाश्च सप्तद्वीपेषु ये नृपाः । अर्ज्जुनस्य च सैन्यैस्तैर्विग्रहस्तुमुलोऽभवत् ॥”)

Relating to a piece (शकल).

Relating, belonging to or derived from the शाकलs. -लः A school of the Ṛigveda or the followers of this school (pl.)

लम् A brown variety of sandal; शाकलं कपलमिति Kau. A.2.11.

A chip, piece.

The text or ritual of शाकल्य. -Comp. -प्रातिशाख्यम् N. of the Ṛigveda Prātiśākhya. -शाखा the recension or traditional text of the Ṛigveda as represented by the Śākalas. -होमः a particular kind of oblation; मन्त्रैः शाकलहोमीयैरब्दं हुत्वा घृतं द्विजः Ms.11.256.

Ed. 2. 32. 14 cites Amara (2. 2. 1) pattanaṁ puṭabhedanam); in the Bāhlīka country (bāhlīkeṣūṣitaṁ mayā/…śākalaṁ nāma nagaram) 8. 30. 13-14.


B. Description: Prosperous (sphīta) 8. 30. 29; people living there called śākalāvataḥ 8. 30. 33.


C. Characteristic: In the Śākala town a Rākṣasī beat the drum on every fourteenth day of the dark fortnight of the month and sang songs in which it was said: when would the loud singers (? ghoṣikāḥ) sing again gāthās in Śākala after eating beef and drinking wine of guḍa ? (tatra sma rākṣasī gāti sadā kṛṣṇacaturdaśīm/nagare śākale sphīte āhatya niśi dundubhim//kadā vā ghoṣikā gāthāḥ punar gāsyanti śākale/gavyasya tṛptā māṁsasya pītvā gauḍaṁ mahāsavam//) 8. 30. 29-30.


D. Epic event: Nakula went to Śākala in his expedition before the Rājasūya and won over Śalya, his maternal uncle, by taking recourse to affection (and not battle) (tataḥ śākalam abhyetya…mātulaṁ prītipūrveṇa śalyaṁ cakre vaśe balī//) 2. 29. 13.

Śākala in the Aitaṛeya Brāhmaṇa denotes the ‘teaching of Śākalya’ according to the St. Petersburg Dictionary. But Bo7htlingk seems right in taking it as a kind of snake in that passage.
