शाट्यायनम्, क्ली, प्रकृतकर्म्मवैगुण्यप्रशमनाथहोमः । यथा । यत्तु प्रकृतकर्म्मवैगुण्यप्रशमनाय शाट्या- यनहोमाभिधानं भवदेवभट्टसम्मतं तन्न प्रामा- णिकं तस्मादपि महाप्रामाणिकैर्भट्टनारायण- चरणैर्गोभिलभाष्ये तदप्रमाणीकृतत्वात् । छन्दोगपरिशिष्टेऽपि प्रायश्चित्तार्थं प्रकारत्रय- मात्रमुक्तम् । यथा, -- “यत्र व्याहृतिभिर्होमः प्रायश्चित्तात्मको भवेत् । चतस्रस्तत्र विज्ञेया स्त्रीपाणिग्रहणे यथा ॥ अपि वाज्ञातमित्येषा प्राजापत्यापि बाहुतिः । होतव्या त्रिर्व्विकल्पोऽयं प्रायश्चित्तविधिः स्मृतः ॥” त्रिर्व्विकल्प इत्यनेन कल्पान्तरनिषेधात् गोभि- लीयकर्म्मणि शाट्यायनहोमो न युक्तः । किन्तु व्यस्तसमस्तमहाव्याहृतिभिश्चतसृभिः प्राय- श्चित्तहोमो युक्तः । विशारदप्रभृतयोऽप्येवम् । शाट्यायनहोमस्य समूलत्वेऽपि शाख्यन्तरीय- त्वम् । इति तिथ्यादितत्त्वम् ॥

Śāṭyāyana, ‘descendant of Śāṭya,’ is the patronymic of a teacher mentioned twice in the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa[१] and often in the Jaiminīya Upaniṣad Brāhmaṇa.[२] In a Vaṃśa (list of teachers) in the latter work[३] he is called a pupil of Jvālāyana, while in the Vaṃśa at the end of the Sāmavidhāna Brāhmaṇa he appears as a pupil of Bādarāyaṇa. The Śāṭyāyanins, his followers, are frequently mentioned in the Sūtras,[४] the Śāṭyāyani Brāhmaṇa[५] and the Śāṭyāyanaka[६] being also referred to in them. It has been shown by Oertel[७] that this Brāhmaṇa bore a close resemblance to, and probably belonged to the same period as, the Jaiminīya Brāhmaṇa.
