विशेषः, पुं, (वि + शिष + घञ् ।) प्रभेदः । (यथा, मनुः । ९ । २६ । “प्रजनार्थं महाभागाः पूजार्हा गृहदीप्तयः । स्त्रियः श्रियश्च गेहेषु न विशेषोऽस्ति कश्चन ॥”) प्रकारः । इति जटाधरः ॥ व्यक्तिः । इति हेम- चन्द्रः ॥ तिलकः । इति हारावली ॥ सप्त- पदार्थान्तर्गतपदार्थविशेषः । यथा, -- “द्रव्यं गुणास्तथा कर्म्म सामान्यं सविशेषकम् । समवायस्तथाभावः पदार्थाः सप्त कीर्त्तिताः ॥” इति भाषापरिच्छेदः ॥ विशेषं निरूपयति । अन्त्यो नित्यद्रव्यवृत्ति- र्विशेषः परिकीर्त्तितः । अन्तेऽवसाने वर्त्तते इति अन्त्यः यदपेक्षया विशेषो नास्तीत्यर्थः । घटपटादीनां द्ब्यणुकपर्य्यन्तानां तत्तदवयवभेदात् परस्परभेदः । परमाणूनां भेदको विशेष एव स तु स्वत एव व्यावृत्तः । तेन तत्र विशेषान्तरा- पेक्षा नास्ति इत्यर्थः । इति सिद्धान्तमुक्ता- वली ॥ * ॥ अलङ्कारप्रभेदः । यथा, -- “विशेषः ख्यातमाधारं विनाप्याषेयवर्णनम् । गते सूर्य्येऽपि द्बीपस्थास्तमश्छिन्दन्ति तत्कराः ॥ १ विशेषः सोऽपि यद्येकं वस्त्वनेकत्र वर्ण्यते । अन्तर्बहिः पुरः पश्चात् सर्व्वदिश्यपि सैव मे ॥ २ ॥ किञ्चिदारम्भतोऽशक्यवस्त्वन्तरकृतिश्च सः । त्वां पश्यता मया लब्धं कल्पवृक्षनिरीक्षणम् ॥” ३ इति चन्द्रालोकः ॥ (पृथिवी । यथा, भागवते । २ । ५ । २९ । “विशेषस्तु विकुर्व्वाणादम्भसो गन्धवानभूत् ॥” तथाच तत्रैव । ३ । ११ । ४० । “विकारैः सहितो युक्तैर्विशेषादिभिरावृतः ॥” अतिशयिते, त्रि । यथा, रघुः । २ । १४ । “शशाम वृष्ट्यापि विना दवाग्नि- रासीद्विशेषा फलपुष्पवृद्धिः ॥”)

“अन्ते अवसाने तिष्ठतीति अन्त्यः यदपेक्षया विशेषोनास्तीत्यर्थः। घटपटादीनां द्व्यणुकपर्य्यन्तानां तत्त-दवयवभेदात् परस्परं भेदः। परमाणूनां भेदको वि-शेष एव स तु स्वत एव व्यावृत्तः तेन तत्र विशेषात्नरा-पेक्षा नास्तीति” सि॰ मुक्ता॰। अयञ्च नित्यद्रव्ये समवायेनतिष्ठति
“तेषु जातेश्च सम्बन्धः समवायः प्रकीर्त्तितः” भाषायांचकारेण नित्यद्रव्येषु विशेषसम्बन्धस्य समवायतायाःग्रहणात्।
“द्रव्यगुणकर्मसामान्यविशेषसमवायानां पदा-र्थानां साधर्म्यवैधर्म्याभ्यां तत्त्वज्ञानानिःश्रेयसम्” कणा॰ सू॰ उद्दिश्य लक्षितं यथा
“अन्यत्रान्त्येभ्योविशेषेभ्यः” सू॰।
“अन्त्या विशेषा नित्यद्रव्यवृत्तयो येऽभि-हितास्तान् वर्जयित्वा सामान्यविशेषाभिधानमित्यर्थः। अन्ते अवमाने भवन्तीत्यन्त्याः यतो न व्यावर्त्तकान्तरमस्तीत्याचार्य्याः उत्पादविनाशयोरन्तेऽवसाने भवन्तीत्यन्त्यानिनित्यद्रव्याणि तेषु भवन्तीत्यन्त्या विशेषाः इति वृत्तिकृतःते हि विशेषा एव व्यावृत्तबुद्धिहेतवः न तु सामान्य-रूपा अपि” उप॰ वृ॰। नित्यैकमात्रवृत्तय इति फलि-तार्थः।
“अन्योन्याभावविरोधिसामान्यरहितः समवेतोविशेषः” सर्व॰ औ॰ माधवः।

(In geom.) The hypotenuse. -Comp. -अतिदेशः a special supplementary rule, special extended application. -उक्तिः f. a figure of speech in which an effect is represented as not taking place though the usual necessary causes exist; विशेषोक्तिरखण्डेषु कारणेषु फलावचः K. P.1; e. g. हृदि स्नेहक्षयो नाभूत् स्मरदीपे ज्वलत्यपि. -करणम् improvement.
गुणः a special or distinguishing property.
(in phil.) such guṇa as is not produced (like संयोग, पृथक्त्व &c.) by the union of two things. -ज्ञ, -विद् a.
