आलम्बनम्, क्ली, (आङ् + लम्ब + ल्युट् ।) अवलम्बनं । विभावविशेषः । यथा, -- “आलम्बनोद्दीपनाख्यौ तस्य भेदावुभौ स्मृतौ । आलम्बनं नायकादिस्तमालम्ब्य रसोद्गमात्” ॥ इति साहित्यदर्पणे ३ य परिच्छेदः ।

आलम्बन¦ न॰ आ + लबि--कर्मण्णि--ल्युट्।
१ आश्रयणीये
“यस्मादेष विभावादिसमूहालम्बनात्मकः” सा॰ द॰उक्ते
२ रसालम्बने नायकादौ।
“आलम्बनं नायकादिस्त-मालम्ब्य रसोद्गमात्” इति तस्यालम्बमशब्दार्थत्वेकारणमुक्तंतत्रैव। रसभेदे आलम्बनभेदाश्च” सा॰ द॰ उक्तायथा शृङ्गारे
“परोढां वर्जयित्वा तु वेश्याञ्चाननुरागिणीम्। आलम्बनंनायिकाः स्युर्दक्षिणाद्याश्च नायकाः”। रौद्रे
“आलम्ब-नमरिस्तत्र तच्चेष्टोद्दीपनं मतम्”। हासे
“विकृताकार-वाक्चेष्टं यदालोक्य हसेज्जनः। तदत्रालम्बनं प्राहुस्त-च्चेष्टोद्दोपनं मतम्”। करुणे।
“शोच्यमालम्बनं मतम्”। वीरे
“आलम्बनविभावास्तु विजेतव्यादयोमताः” भया-नके।
“यस्मादुत्पद्यते भीतिस्तदेवालम्बनं मतम्”। जुगु-प्सायाम्।
“दुर्गन्धमांसपिशितन्तदेवालम्बनं मतम्”। वि-स्मये।
“विस्मये च वस्तु लोकातिगमालम्बनं मतम्” शान्ते
“अनित्यत्वादिनाऽशेषवस्तुनोऽसारता तु या। परमात्मस्वरूपंवा तस्यालम्बनमिष्यते”।
४ बौद्धमतसिद्धे प्रत्ययभेदे च
“चत्वारः प्रत्ययाः प्रसिद्धा आलम्बनसमनन्तरसहकार्य्य-धिपतिरूपा” इति विभज्य
“तत्र ज्ञानपदवेदनीयस्यनीलाद्यवभासस्य चित्तस्य नीलोल्लेखिप्रत्ययात् नीलाकारताभवतीति” सर्वदर्श॰। अधिकमालयविज्ञानशब्दे वक्ष्यते।

Support, prop, stay; एतदालम्बनं श्रेष्ठमेतदालम्बनं परम् Kaṭh. Up.2.17. Ki.2.13; जातस्य नदीतीरे तस्यापि तृणस्य जन्मसाफल्यम् । यत्सलिलमज्जनाकुलजनहस्तावलम्बनं भवति ॥ Pt.1.28.; sustaining, supporting; Me.4.

(In Rhet.) That on which a रस or sentiment, as it were, hangs, person or thing with reference to which a sentiment arises, the natural and necessary connection of sentiment with the cause which excites it. The causes (विभाव) giving rise to a Rasa are classified as two: आलम्बन and उद्दीपन; e. g. in the Bībhatsa sentiment stinking flesh &c. is the आलम्बन of the Rasa, and the attendant circumstances which enhance the feeling of loathing (the worms &c. in the flesh) are its उद्दीपनानि (exciters); for the other Rasas see S. D.21-238.
The mental exercise practised by the Yogin in endeavouring to bring before his thoughts the gross form of the Eternal.
Silent repetition of a prayer.
(With Buddhists) The five attributes of things corresponding to five senses, i. e. रूप, रस, गन्ध, स्पर्श and शब्द.
Dharma or law corresponding to manas.
