--the eldest son of Vaivasvata Manu; born of पुत्रेष्टि; anointed by Manu going to Mahendra hill for तपस्; set out for दिग्विजय, when he reached शरवण gardens where उमा was sporting with शिव। There was a curse by which a male who entered the garden was turned into a female. So Ila became इला। Bewildered इला was wan- dering and was met by Budha, Soma's son. She agreed to be his partner and followed him. इक्ष्वाकु and his brothers were concerned at their missing Ila and were told by वसिष्ठ of his whereabouts. On वसिष्ठ's advice, इक्ष्वाकु per- formed an अश्वमेध, as the result of which Ila would be a किम्पुरुष for a month and इला for the next alternately. As इला, she gave birth to पुरूरवस्, the first of the lunar race. In a way Ila was responsible for the two dynasties--solar and lunar. M. ११. ४०-66; १२. 1-१४. [page१-201+ ३०]
