Kuṣumbhaka seems in one passage of the Rigveda to mean a poisonous insect, Kuṣumbha in th Atharvaveda clearly having the sense of a poison bag. Sāyaṇa renders it as ‘ichneumon’ (nakula).

Kuṣumbhaka, according to Egerton (Journal of the American Oriental Society, 31, 134), denotes ‘poison-bag’ in both passages of the Rigveda.
