गणः, पुं, (गण्यते गणयति वा कर्म्मण्यप् । कर्त्तरि अच् वा ।) समूहः । (यथा, हितोपदेशे १ । ९३ । “न गणस्याग्रतो गच्छेत् सिद्धे कार्य्ये समं फलम् ॥”) प्रमथः । (यथा, मेघदूते । ३५ । “भर्त्तुः कण्ठच्छविरितिगणैः सादरं वीक्ष्यमाणः ॥”) रुद्रानुचरः । (यथा, गोः रामायणे । ५ । ८९ । ७ । “धनाध्यक्षसभां देवः प्राप्तो हि वृषभध्यजः । उमासहायो देवेशो गणैश्च बहुभिर्वृतः ॥”) सेनासंख्याविशेषः । तद्यथा । गजाः २७ रथाः २७ अश्वाः ८१ पदातिकाः १३५ समु- दायेन २७० । इत्यमरः । २ । ८ । ८१ ॥ (यथा, महाभारते । “त्रयो गुल्मा गणो नाम वाहिनी तु गणास्त्रयः ॥”) संख्या । चोरनामगन्धद्रव्यम् । इति मेदिनी ॥ * ॥ गणेशः । यथा, महानिर्व्वाणतन्त्रे । “गाणपस्तु महेशानि ! गणदीक्षाप्रवर्त्तकः ॥” अश्विन्यादिजन्मनक्षत्रानुसारेण देवमानुष- राक्षसगण इति तु पारिभाषिकम् । यथा, -- “दे म रा म दे मा दे दे रा रा म म द रा द रा ॥ दे रा रा म म दे रा रा म म देति गणत्रयम् ॥” इति ज्योतिषरत्नमाला ॥ “पूर्ब्बोत्तरात्रयञ्चैव भरण्यार्द्रा च रोहिणी । इमानि मानुषाण्याहुर्नक्षत्राणि मनीषिणः ॥ ज्येष्ठाशतभिषामूलधनिष्ठाश्लेषकृत्तिकाः । चित्रामघाविशाखाः स्युस्तारा राक्षसदेवताः ॥ अश्विनी रेवती पुष्यः स्वाती हस्तः पुनर्व्वसुः । अनुराधा मृगशिरः श्रवणं देवतारकाः ॥” इति निबन्धः ॥ (तस्य मिलनकथनं यथा, ज्योतिषे । “सजातौ परमा प्रीतिर्मध्यमा देवमानुषे । देवासुरे कनिष्ठा च मृत्युर्मानुषराक्षसे ॥”) धातुसमूहः । यथा, मनोरमा । “भ्वाद्यदादिजुहोत्यादिदिवादिः स्वादिरेव च । तुदारुधातनुक्र्यादिश्चुरादिश्च गणा दश ॥” (छन्दःशास्त्रोक्तपारिभाषिकाक्षरविशेषः । स तु म-न-भ-य-ज-र-स-त-ग-लसंज्ञः । इति छन्दो- मञ्जरी ॥ * ॥ महादेवः । यथा, महाभारते । १३ । १७ । ४० । “विश्वरूपः स्वयं श्रेष्ठो बलवीरो बलो गणः ॥” दैत्यविशेषः । स तुं अभिजिदिति नामान्तरस्य दैत्यस्य गुणवतो भार्य्यायां गुणवत्यां सम्भूतः । यथा, स्कन्दपुराणे गणेशखण्डे ३ अध्याये । “अथ सोऽप्यभिजित् पत्न्या समुद्रस्नानमाययौ । पर्व्वणि श्रद्धया युक्तश्चक्रे स्नानं तया सह ॥ तृषिता सा गुणवती पपौ चाञ्जलिना जलम् । यद्बीर्य्यं ब्रह्मणा त्यक्तं दैवात्तदुरे गतम् ॥” “भार्य्यागुणवती तस्य नवमासादनन्तरम् । पुत्त्रं प्रसूताह्नि शुंभे दिव्यरूपं गुणाद्भुतम् ॥ ज्योतिर्विद्भिरनुज्ञातो गण इत्यभिधां पिता । कृत्वाभ्युदयिकं चक्रे व्यत्यीते दशमेऽहनि ॥” स च महादेवमाराध्य वरं लब्ध्वा त्रैलोक्यं निर्जित्य च कपिलमुनेश्चिन्तामणिमपहृतवान् । कपिलमुनिस्तु अस्मादपराधात् जातमन्युर्गणेश- माराधयामास । अथ प्रसन्नेन गणपतिना तद्- गृहे अवतीर्य्य तं गणदैत्यं विनाशितवान् इत्येषा- कथा तत्रैवाध्याये विस्तरशो द्रष्टव्या ॥)

N. of Gaṇeśa. [He is the son of Śiva and Pārvatī, or of Pārvatī only; for according to one legend, he sprang from the scurf of her body. He is the god of wisdom and remover of obstacles; hence he is invoked and worshipped at the commencement of every important undertaking. He is usually represented in a sitting posture, short and fat, with a protuberant belly, and four hands; riding a mouse; and with the head of an elephant. This head has only one tusk, the other having been lost in a scuffle between him and Paraśurāma when he opposed the latter's entrance to Śiva's inner apartments; (whence he is called Ekadanta, Ekadaṁṣṭra &c.). There are several legends accounting for his elephant head. It is said that he wrote the Mahābhārata at the dictation of Vyāsa who secured his services as a scribe from the god Brahman].
