पृष्ठभागोऽयं यन्त्रेण केनचित् काले काले मार्जयित्वा यथास्रोतः परिवर्तयिष्यते। तेन मा भूदत्र शोधनसम्भ्रमः। सज्जनैः मूलमेव शोध्यताम्।

चन्द्रगुप्तः, पुं, (चन्द्रेण गुप्तः रक्षितः । चन्द्र- वदाह्लादजनकरूपगुणवत्त्वात्तथात्वं वा ।) राज- विशेषः । (यथा, भागवते । १२ । १ । ११ -- १२ । “नवनन्दान् द्विजः कश्चित् प्रपन्नानुद्धरिष्यति । तेषामभावे जगतीं मौर्य्या भोक्ष्यन्ति वै कलौ । स एव चन्द्रगुप्तं वै द्विजो राज्येऽभिषेक्ष्यति ॥”) चित्रगुप्तः । इति केचित् ॥

(I)--anointed first king of the Mauryas by the ब्राह्मण Kaut2alya who brought about the fall of Nandas; ruled for २४ years. भा. XII. 1. १३; Br. III. ७४. १४४; वा. ९९. ३३१; Vi. IV. २४. २८.

(II)--the unrighteous minister of Hai- haya who advised the king to get by peace or force the cow of Jamadagni so that he could ever have plenty. The king agreed and sent him to fetch the cow. Jamadagni argued that it was intended for religious purposes. The minister, without listening to those words had the animal bound. Jamadagni tied himself to the cow, and being beaten fell down dead. The cow kicked off her fetters and flew into [page१-584+ २९] heaven. The minister reported the matter to the king who returned to his city greatly dejected. Br. III. २८. ३१-7; २९. 8 ff.

(III)--a commander to aid विषङ्ग; was killed by दुह्शिला. Br. IV. २४. २९.

CANDRAGUPTA I : Second son of Rāvaṇa. Once when Śrī Rāma was King, Candragupta abducted the daughter o! Sugrīva and the daughter-in-law of Vibhī- ṣaṇa. Hanumān released them both as ordered by Śrī Rāma. (Kampa Rāmāyaṇa Uttara Kāṇḍa; also see Sahasramukha Rāvaṇa).

CANDRAGUPTA II : A minister of Kārtavīryārjuna. Kārtavīryārjuna was once fed sumptuously by Jamad- agni at his āśrama with the help of Śuśīlā, the deva- surabhi (divine cow). Candragupta, at the instance of Kārtavīryārjuna tried to capture Suśīlā by force, which disappeared immediately in the sky. Kārtavīryārjuna's servants then forcibly took away its calf. Candragupta thrashed to death Jamadagni, who tried to obstruct their action. (See Kārtavīrya, Para 9).
