चन्द्रभागा, स्त्री, (चन्द्रभागः पर्व्वतविशेषः स उत्पत्तिस्थानत्वेनास्त्यस्याः । “अर्श आदिभ्यो- ऽच् ।” ५ । २ । १२७ । इत्यच् ततष्टाप् । चन्द्र- भागात् पर्व्वतविशेषात् जाता इति वा ।) नदीविशेषः । इत्यमरः । १ । १० । ३४ ॥ तत्- पर्य्यायः । चन्द्रभागी २ चन्द्रिका ३ । इति शब्दरत्नावली ॥ सा तु काश्मीरदेशे प्रसिद्धा । तस्या उत्पत्तिर्यथा, -- मार्कण्डेय उवाच । “यत्र देवसभा भूता सानौ तस्य महागिरेः । तत्र जाता देवनदी शीताख्या वचनाद्विधेः ॥ स्नापयित्वा यथा चन्द्रं शीतातोयैर्म्मनोहरैः । चन्द्रं पपुर्ब्रह्मवाक्यात् सर्व्वे ते त्रिदिवौकसः ॥ तदा शीताजलं चन्द्रस्नानयोगाच्च सामृतम् । भूत्वा निपतितं तस्मिन् वृहल्लोहितसंज्ञके ॥ तद्विवृद्धं तदा तोयं तस्मिन् सरसि निर्म्मलम् । तद्ददर्श स्वयं ब्रह्मा विवृद्धं साधु तज्जलम् ॥ तद्दर्शनाज्जलात्तस्मादुत्थिता कन्यकोत्तमा । चन्द्रभागेति तन्नाम विधिश्चक्रे स्वयं ततः ॥ भार्य्यार्थे सागरस्तान्तु जग्राह ब्रह्मसम्मते । तत्रैवाधिष्ठितं तोयं गदाग्रेण निशापतिः ॥ निर्भिद्य पश्चिभे पार्श्वे गिरिं तत्तु प्रवाहयत् । तत् सामृतजलं भित्त्वा बृहल्लोहितसंज्ञकम् ॥ कासारं सागरं जातं चन्द्रभागा नदी तु सा । सागरोऽपि तदा भार्य्यां चन्द्रभागां महानदीम् ॥ तेन तोयप्रवाहेण निनाय भवनं स्वकम् । एवं तस्मिन् समुत्पन्ना चन्द्रभागाह्वया नदी ॥ चन्द्रभागे महाशैले गुणैर्गङ्गासमा सदा ।” इति कालिकापुराणे २२ अध्यायः ॥ अस्या जलस्य गुणः । सुशीतलत्वम् । दाहपित्त- वातनाशित्वञ्च । इति राजनिर्घण्टः ॥

A. Location: Listed by Saṁjaya among the rivers of the Bhāratavarṣa; its water used by people for drinking 6. 10. 14, 13; one of the six rivers which flow outside the country called the Āraṭṭa (pañca nadyo vahanty etāḥ …āraṭṭā nāma te deśāḥ) 8. 30. 35-36.
B. Description: Listed among the rivers which are described as most holy (puṇyatamāḥ) and auspicious (śivāḥ) 13. 134. 16, 22; excellent rivers (saridvarāḥ) 13. 134. 14, (saricchreṣṭhāḥ) 13. 134. 22, containing waters of all the tīrthas (sarvatīrthodakair yutāḥ) 13. 134. 12, and flowing to the ocean (sāgaragamāḥ) 13. 134. 21; the rivers listed by Saṁjaya are described as mothers of the universe and very strong 6. 10. 35 (for citation see Atikṛṣṇā ).
