पृष्ठभागोऽयं यन्त्रेण केनचित् काले काले मार्जयित्वा यथास्रोतः परिवर्तयिष्यते। तेन मा भूदत्र शोधनसम्भ्रमः। सज्जनैः मूलमेव शोध्यताम्।

धृतराष्ट्रः, पुं, (धृतं राष्ट्रं येन ।) दुर्य्योधनपिता । स जन्मान्धः शान्तनुपुत्त्रः विचित्रवीर्य्यक्षेत्रे व्यासाज्जातः । इति महाभारते । १ । ९५ । ५५ ॥ (अयं हि गन्धर्व्वपतेर्हंसस्य अंशावतारः । यथा, महाभारते । १ । ६७ । ८४ । “अरिष्टायास्तु यः पुत्त्रो हंस इत्यभिविश्रुतः । स गन्धर्व्वपतिर्जज्ञे कुरुवंशविवर्द्धनः ॥”) सुराजा । नागभेदः । इति मेदिनी । रे, २७१ ॥ (यथा, महाभारते । २ । ९ । ९ । “कम्बलाश्वतरौ नागौ धृतराष्ट्रबलाहकौ ॥”) पक्षिभेदः । इति विश्वहेमचन्द्रौ ॥ (गन्धर्व्व- विशेषः । यथा, विष्णुपुराणे । २ । १० । १५ । “ब्रह्मापेतोऽथ ऋतजित् धृतराष्ट्रोऽथ सप्तमः ॥” बलिराजस्य पुत्त्रविशेषः । यथा, हरिवंशे । ३ । ७४ । “बलेः पुत्त्रशतञ्चासीद्बाणज्येष्ठं नराधिप ! । धृतराष्ट्रश्च सूर्य्यश्च चन्द्रमाश्चेन्द्रतापनः ॥” जनमेजयस्य ज्येष्ठपुत्त्रः । यथा, महाभारते । १ । ९४ । ५४ । “जनमेजयस्य तनया भुवि ख्याता महाबलाः । धृतराष्ट्रः प्रथमजः पाण्डुर्व्वाह्लीक एव च ॥”)

“गन्धर्वराजो यो धीमान् धृतराष्ट्र इतिश्रुतः। स सव मानुषो लोके धृतराष्ट्रः पतिस्तव” भा॰आश्व॰

४ नृपभेदे
“शान्तनुः खलु गङ्गां भागीरथीमुपयेमे तस्यामस्य जज्ञेदेवव्रतो नाम यमाहुभीं ष्ममिति। भीष्मः खलु पितुःप्रियचिकीर्षया सत्यवतीं मातरमुदवाहयत् यामाहुर्गन्ध-कालीमिति। तस्यां पूर्वं कानीनो गर्भः पराशराद्द्वै-पायनोऽभवत्। तस्यामेव शान्तनोरन्यौ द्वौ पुत्रौ बभू-वतुः। विचित्रवीर्य्यश्चित्राङ्गदश्च तयोरप्राप्तयौवन एवचित्राङ्गदो गन्धर्वेण हतः विचित्रवीर्य्यस्तु राजासीत्। विचित्रवीर्य्यः खलु कौशल्यात्मजे अम्बिकाम्बालिकेकाशिराजदुहितरावुपयेमे। विचित्रवीर्य्यस्त्वनपत्य एवविदेहत्वं प्राप्तः। ततः सत्यवत्यचिन्तयन्मा दौष्यन्तो वंशउच्छेदं व्रजेदिति। सा द्वैपायनमृषिं मनसा चिन्तया-मास। स तस्याः पुरतः स्थितः किङ्करवाणीति। सातामुपवाच भ्राता तवानपत्य एव स्वर्यातो विचित्रवीर्य्यःसाध्वपत्यं तस्योत्पादयेति। स तथेत्युक्त्वा त्रीन् पुत्रा-मुत्पादयामास। धृतराष्ट्रं पाण्डुं विदुरञ्चेति” भा॰आ॰

५ पक्षिभेदे हंसे पुंस्त्री हेमच॰ तस्य धृतराष्ट्री-जातत्वात् तथात्वम् स्त्रियां ङीप्। सा च कश्यपस्यताम्रायां पत्न्यां जाते

६ कन्याभेदे
“काकीं श्येनीं तथा भासीं धृतराष्ट्रिं तथा शुकीम्। ताम्रा तु सुषुवे देवी पञ्चैता लोकविश्रुताः”
“धृतराष्ट्रीतु हंसांश्च कलहंसांश्च सर्वशः” भा॰ आ॰

६६ अ॰। ताम्रा तु दक्षकन्या कश्यपपत्नी ताम्रशब्दानुक्तेः अत्रोच्यते
“सुरभिर्विनता चैव ताम्रा क्रोधवशा इरा। कद्रुर्मुनिश्चराजेन्द्र! तास्वपत्यानि मे शृणु” हरिवं॰

धृतराष्ट्र¦ m. (-ष्ट्रः) A proper name; DHRITARA4SHT4RA, the father of DU4RYO4DHANA, and uncle of the Pan4d4u princes.
2. A good king.
3. A Na4ga4 or serpent of the lower regions.
4. A kind of bird, perhaps a short of goose: see धार्त्तराष्ट्र। f. (-री) A goose, the female bird only. E. धृत possessed, cherished, (by whom,) राष्ट्र a region.

A. Birth and Family: Son of Surasā and Kaśyapa 5. 101. 4, 17; also listed by Sūta among the sons of Kadrū 1. 31. 13, 2; serpents born in his kula listed by Sūta among those offered in the snake sacrifice of Janamejaya 1. 52. 13-17.


B. Description: Marked with jewel, svastika, circles and kamaṇḍalu; having many heads and huge shape like a mountain 5. 101. 5-7.


C. Eminence: Called high-souled (mahātman 16. 5. 14); considered as the foremost among the snakes (dhṛtarāṣṭraś ca nāgānāṃ (varaḥ) 4. 2. 14); Uttaṅka while praising the nāgas mentioned that when Dhṛtarāṣṭra went out two thousand eight hundred and eight snakes moved as his attendants (?) (śatāny aśītir aṣṭau ca sahasrāṇi ca viṁśatiḥ sarpāṇāṁ pragrahā yānti dhṛtarāṣṭro yad ejati) 1. 3. 142.


D. Functions and Part in the myths: One of the snakes who wait on Varuṇa in his sabhā 2. 9. 9; he, along with other serpents, received the white snake issuing from the mouth of Balarāma and entering the ocean 16. 5. 14, 12; when gods prepared Śiva's chariot for his fight against the tripuras they made its strong pole (īṣā) with ten lordly elephants chief of whom was Dhṛtarāṣṭra 8. 24. 72.
