धेनुकः, पुं, (धेनुरिव प्रतिकृतिः । “इवे प्रति- कृतौ ।” ५ । ३ । ९६ । इति कन् ।) असुर- विशेषः । स बलरामेण हतः । इति श्रीभागवते १५ अध्यायः ॥ (अयन्तु गर्द्दभरूपी गोवर्द्धन स्योत्तरपार्श्वस्थतालवनवासी । यथा, हरिवशे । ६९ । २ -- २३ । “आजग्मतुस्तौ सहितौ गोधनैः सहगामिनौ । गिरिं गोवर्द्धनं रम्यं वसुदेवसुतायुभौ ॥ गोवर्द्धनस्योत्तरतो यमुनातीरमाश्रितम् । “सुप्तां स्त्रियं समालिङ्ग्य स्वयं सुप्तो रमेत् पुनः । लघुलिङ्ग चालयेद्यो बन्धोऽयं धेनुकः स्मृतः ॥” इति रतिमञ्जरी ॥ (अपरविधलक्षणं यथा, -- “न्यस्तहस्तयुगला निजे पदे योषिदेति कटिरूढवल्लभा । अग्रतो यदि शनैरधोमुखी धेनुकं वृषवदुन्नते प्रिये ! ॥”)

“दारुणो धेनुको नाम दैत्यो गर्दभरूपवान्। खरयूथेन महतावृतो बलवतां वरः। स तु तालवनंघोरं गर्दभः परिरक्षति। नृपक्षिश्वापदगणांस्त्रास-यन्नतिदर्पितः” हरिवं॰

२ रतिबन्धभेदे तल्लक्षणंरतिमञ्जर्य्यामुक्तं यथा
“न्यस्तहस्तयुगला निजे पदेयोषिदेति कटिरूढवल्लभा। अग्रतो यदि शनैरधोमुखीधेनुकं वृषवदुन्नते प्रिये!। ”
“सुप्तां स्त्रियं समा-सिङ्ग्य स्वयं सुप्तोरमेत् पुनः। लघु लिङ्गं चालयेद्योबन्धोऽयं धेनुकः स्मृतः”।

--an Asura friend of Kamsa; in the form of an ass jealously guarded the palmyra forest near ब्रिन्दा- vana. At the desire of his cowherd friends to eat the fruits of that palm grove, बलराम entered it and brought down fruits; the Asura came down and kicked him in his chest; he caught hold of him and whirled him to death; his kith and kin, other asses came and were dashed against trees; killed by कृष्ण. फलकम्:F1: भा. Dhenuka : nt., Denukā f.: Name of a sacred place.
Described as famous in the world (lokaviśrutā) 3. 82. 76; one should stay there for a night and give as a gift a tiladhenukā; the gift cleanses the giver of all sins and he goes to the world of Soma (ekarātroṣito rājan prayacchet tiladhenukām) 3. 82. 76 (“In imitation of the gift of the cow gifts of certain articles were made and they are also described as dhenus” P. V. Kane Hist. of Dharma. II. II p. 880; cf. Mbh. 13. 70. 37-40); Pulastya told Bhīṣma that a Kapilā cow with her calf roamed near this place on the mountain; the signs of their hoof-prints are seen even now; if one touches the dust from those prints (teṣūpaspṛśya rājendra padeṣu nṛpasattama), whatever unholy deed (aśubhaṁ karma) one may have committed that is destroyed 3. 82. 77-78; Mṛtyu conceived as a maiden, unwilling to carry out Brahman's instruction to deprive the subjects of their lives, repaired to Dhenuka without agreeing to carry out the instruction, and practised severe austerities 12. 250. 15-16 (Nī. on Bom.
