निवृत्तः, त्रि, (नि + वृत् + क्तः ।) निवृत्ति- विशिष्टः । विरतः । यथा, श्रीभागवते । १० । १ । ४ । “निवृत्ततर्षैरुपगीयमाना- द्भवौषधाच्छ्रोत्रमनोऽभिरामात् । क उत्तमश्लोकगुणानुवादात् पुमान् विरज्येत विना पशुघ्नात् ॥”

निवृत्त¦ न॰ नि + वृत--भावे क्त।
१ निवृत्तौ यत्नभेदे चित्तस्यविषयेभ्य
२ उपरमे च।
३ अभावे न॰। नञ्सूत्रभाष्ये
“निवृत्तपदार्थक” इत्युक्तम्।
“तस्यार्थः निवृत्तमभावःपदार्थो यस्येति नपुंसके भावे क्त इति” वैयाकरणभूषणे[Page4109-a+ 38] उक्तं, हरिण्याप्युक्त्रं यथा
“अभावो वा तदर्थस्तुभाष्यस्य हि तदाशयात्”। कर्त्तरि क्त।

“प्रवृत्तञ्च निवृत्तं च द्विविधं कर्म वैदिकम्। सर्गादौ सृजता सृष्टं ब्रह्मणा वेदरूपिणा” हेमा॰व्रत॰ भृगुः। धर्मभेदस्य निवृत्तिपूर्वकत्वादुपचारादत्रनिवृत्तपदव्यपदेश्यता।

Ceased, refrained or abstained from, stopped, desisted; तस्थौ निवृत्तान्यवरा- भिलाषः Ku.1.51.
Abstaining from worldly acts, abstracted from this world, quiet; प्रवृत्तं च निवृत्तं च द्विविधं कर्म वैदिकम् Ms.12.88.
Repenting of improper conduct.
Finished, completed, whole;
Set (as the sun); see वृत् with नि.
त्तम् Return.
A mind free from the influence of passions. -Comp. -आत्मन् m.

an epithet of Viṣṇu. -इन्द्रिय a. one whose senses or desires are averted from. -कारण a. without further cause or motive. (-णः ) a virtuous man, a man uninfluenced by worldly desires. -मांस a. one who abstains from eating meat; निवृत्तमांसस्तु जनकः U.4. -यौवन a. one whose youth has returned, restored to youth. -राग a. of subdued passions. -लौल्य a. not desirous. -वृत्ति a. quitting any practice or occupation.-हृदय a. with relenting heart.

Dhṛṣṭadyumna used it when he, with a sword and a shield in hand, wanted to attack Droṇa who was shooting arrows at him 7. 164. 145-148.
