मीमांसा, स्त्री, (मानविचारे + “मान् बधदान् शानभ्यो दीर्घश्चाभ्यासस्य ।” ३ । १ । ६ । इति सन् । अः टाप् । अभ्यासस्येकारस्य दीर्घश्च ।) षड्- दर्शनान्तर्गतदर्शनशास्त्रविशेषः । तत्पर्य्यायः । विचारणा २ । इति हेमचन्द्रः । २ । १६५ ॥ अस्या अध्याया विंशतिः । तत्र पर्ब्बमीमांसा द्वादशा- ध्यायात्मिका जैमिनिप्रणीता यज्ञादिकर्म्मकाण्ड- निरूपिका । अस्या अन्तर्गतानि लोकव्यव- हारनियमार्थं मनुयाज्ञवल्क्यादिभिः बहूनि धर्म्मशास्त्राणि कृतानि । तत्रोत्तरमीमांसा चतुरध्यायात्मिका वेदव्यासप्रणीता ब्रह्मनिरू- पिका । अस्या नाम वेदान्तः । अपराध्याय- चतुष्टयं सङ्कर्षणप्रणीतं उपासनाकाण्डं षड्- दर्शनबहिर्भूतम् ॥ * ॥ प्रमाणादयः प्रसङ्गान्ता द्वादश पदार्थाः क्रमात् द्बादशानामध्यायानां विषयाः । प्रथमेऽध्याये विध्यर्थवादादिरूपं धर्म्मे प्रमाणं निरूपितम् । १ । द्बितीये याग- दानादिकर्म्मभेदः । २ । तृतीये प्रयाजादीनां दर्शपूर्णमासार्थकत्वेन तच्छेषत्वम् । ३ । चतुर्थे गोदोहनस्य पुरुषार्थत्वप्रयुक्त्या अनुष्ठानं न तु क्रत्वर्थत्वप्रयुक्त्येत्येवमादयः । ४ । पञ्चमे क्रम- नियतिविधेयत्वादयः । ५ । षष्ठे कर्त्तुरधिकारो नान्धादेरित्यादयः । ६ । सप्तमे समानमितर- च्छ्येनेन इत्यादि प्रत्यक्षवचनेनाग्निहोत्रादि- नाम्नानुमितवचनेन च सामान्यतोऽतिदेशः । ७ । अष्टमे सौर्य्यं चरुं निर्ब्बपेदित्यत्र निर्व्वापस्तद्धि- तेन देवतानिर्द्देशः एकदैवतत्त्वमौषधद्रव्यकत्व- मित्यादिना लिङ्गेनाग्नेयपुरोडाशेतिकर्त्तव्यता- नान्यस्येत्येवमादिविशेषातिदेशः । ८ । नवमे प्रकृतावग्नये युष्टं निर्व्वपामीति पठिते मन्त्रे विकृतौ सौर्य्यचरावग्निपदपरित्यागेन सूर्य्यपद- प्रक्षेपेण सूर्य्याय युष्टं निर्व्वपामीत्येवमादिरूहः । ९ । दशमे कृष्णलेषु चोदकप्राप्तस्यावघातस्य वितुषीकरणासम्भवेन लोप इत्येवमादिर्व्वाधः । १० । एकादशे बहूनामाग्नेयादीनां प्रधानानां

मीमांसा¦ f. (-सा) One of the philosophical systems of the Hindus, or rather a two-fold system, the two parts of which form two of the six Dars4hanas or schools of philosophy; the first part, the Pu4rva Mi4ma4nsa4, or Mi4ma4ns4 simply, originates with the Muni JAIMINI4, and illustrates the Karma-ka4n4da of the Ve4das or the practical part, (the ritual,) of religion and devotion, including also moral and legal obligations. The second part, or Uttara Mi4m4ansa4, ascribed to VYA4SA, is the same as the Ve4da4nta, founded on the Jna4na-ka4n4da, or theological portion of the Ve4das, and treating of the spiritual worship of the Supreme Being or soul of the universe. E. मान् to seek knowledge, affs. अङ् and टाप्; the derivative takes the augment of the reduplicate form of the verb.

Deep reflection, inquiry, examination, investigation; अथातो व्रतमीमांसा Bṛi. Up.1.5.21; रसगङ्गाधरनाम्नीं करोति कुतुकेन काव्य- मीमांसाम् R. G.; सैषा आनन्दस्य मीमांसा भवति Tait. Up.; so दत्तक˚, अलंकार˚ &c.
N. of one of the six chiefdarśanas or systems of Indian philsophy. (It was originally divided into two systems: the पूर्वमीमांसा or कर्ममीमांसा founded by Jaimini, and the उत्तरमीमांसा or ब्रह्ममीमांसा ascribed to Bādarāyaṇa; but the two systems have very little in common between them, the first concerning itself chiefly with the correct interpretation of the ritual of the Veda and the settlement of dubious points in regard to Vedic texts; and the latter dealing chiefly with the nature of Brahman or the Supreme Spirit. The पूर्वमीमांसा is, therefore, usually, styled only मीमांसा or the Mīmāṁsā, and the उत्तर- मीमांसा, वेदान्त which, being hardly a sequel of Jaimini's system, is now considered and ranked separately.) मीमांसाकृतमुन्ममाथ सहसा हस्ती मुनिं जैमिनिम् Pt.2.34. -Comp. -कारः, -कृत् m.
