युधिष्ठिरः, पुं, (युधि संग्रामे स्थिरः । “गवि- युधिभ्यां स्थिरः ।” ८ । ३ । ९५ । इति षत्वम् । “हलदन्तात् सप्तम्याः संज्ञायाम् ।” ६ । ३ । ९ । इति सप्तम्या अलुक् ।) पाण्डवराजः । स कुन्ती- गर्भे धर्म्माज्जातः । तत्पर्य्यायः । अजातशत्रुः २ शल्यारिः ३ धर्म्मपुत्त्रः ४ अजमीढः ५ । इति हेमचन्द्रः । ३ । ३७१ ॥ (मृगशापाभितप्तः पाण्डुर्निरपत्यतया खिन्नचित्तः पुत्त्रार्थमेकदा धर्म्मपत्नीं कुन्तीमुवाच । शुचिस्मिते ! अनपत्यो हि न शुभलोकार्ह इति विचिन्त्य त्वं मदुपका- रार्थं केनापि पुत्त्रमुत्पादयेति । एवमुक्ता कुन्ती दृष्ट्वा च पत्युराग्रहातिशयं धार्म्मिकपुत्त्रलाभाय दुर्व्वासः प्रदत्तमन्त्रबलेन धर्म्ममाहूय तेन सङ्गता युधिष्ठिरं पुत्त्रमलभत । यदुक्तं महाभारते । १ । १२३ । ५ -- ८ । “संयुक्ता सा हि धर्म्मेण योगमूर्त्तिधरेण ह । लेभे पुत्त्रं वारारोहा सर्व्वप्राणभृतां हितम् ॥ ऐन्द्रे चन्द्रसमायुक्ते मुहूर्त्तेऽभिजितेऽष्टमे । दिवा मध्यगते सूर्य्ये तिथौ पूर्णेऽतिपूजिते ॥ समृद्धयशसं कुन्ती सुषाव प्रवरं सुतम् । जातमात्रे सुते तस्मिन् वागुवाचाशरीरिणी ॥ एष धर्म्मभृतां श्रेष्ठो भविष्यति नरोत्तमः ॥ विक्रान्तः सत्यवाक् चैव राजा पृथ्व्यां भविष्यति । युधिष्ठिर इति ख्यातः पाण्डोः प्रथमजः सुतः ॥” अथ गच्छति काले धृतराष्ट्रेण यौवराज्ये स्थापितोऽयं दयादाक्षिण्यादिगुणपरम्परया प्रजासु लब्धकीर्त्तिरनुजैः सह सुखमुवास । अथ जतुगृहदाहानन्तरं त्यक्तराज्यो द्रुपदराज्य- मभिगम्य द्रौपदीं सानुजः परिणीय पुनः स्वराज्यमागतवान् । ततः कृष्णसहायो राज- सूययज्ञकरणाय दुर्जयान् जरासन्धप्रभृति- नृपतीन् हत्वा राजसूयेष्टिं समापयामास । ततोऽसूयापरवशदुर्य्योधनमतानुसारिणा कैतव- पटुना शकुनिना सह द्यूतं कृत्वा पराजितो- ऽनुजैर्भीमादिभिः पत्न्या द्रौपद्यां च सहितो द्बादशवर्षं वनवासाय एकवर्षमज्ञातवासाय च प्रस्थितो द्बैतवनमध्युवास । ततो द्वादशवर्षैर्वन- वासजातं महत् कष्टमनुभूय अज्ञातवासार्थं त्रयोदशवर्षंविराटनगरमधिवसन् पुनः कृष्ण- सहायः स्वराज्यप्राप्त्यर्थं महतीं चेष्टां कृतवान् । कृतेऽपि यत्ने यदा विगुणग्रहो दुर्य्योधनो राज्यादिकं न दत्तवान् तदा लब्धसैन्यबलोऽसौ कुरुक्षेत्र महत् युद्धं कृत्वा विनाश्य च दुर्य्यो- धनादीन् हस्तिनाधिपतिः सम्राट् बभूव । अथाश्वमेधादिना सुरगणान् परितोष्य षट्- त्रिंशद्बर्षं राज्यसुखमनुभूतवान् । ततः प्रभासे विप्रशापात् यदुवंशक्षयमाकर्ण्यातिनिर्व्विण्णः षट्त्रिंशवर्षवयस्कं अर्ज्जुनपौत्त्रं परीक्षितं स्वराज्येऽभिषिच्य उत्तरामार्गेण स्वर्गारोहणं कृतवानिति । तथाच देवीभागवते । २ । ८ । १५-१७ । “देहत्यागं हरेः श्रुत्वा यादवानां क्षयं तथा । गमनाय मतिं चक्रे राजा हैमाचलं प्रति ॥ षट्त्रिंशद्वार्षिकं राज्ये स्थापयित्वोत्तरासुतम् । निर्जगाम वनं राजा द्रौपद्या भ्रातृभिः सह ॥ षट्त्रिंशच्चैव वर्षाणि कृत्वा राज्यं गजाह्वये । गत्वा हिमाचले षट् ते जहुः प्राणान् पृथासुताः ॥” अस्यान्यद्बिशेषविवरणन्तु महाभारतादौ विस्त- रशो द्रष्टव्यम् ॥)

युधिष्ठिर¦ m. (-रः) The elder of the five Pa4n4d4ava princes, and leader in the great war, between them and the Kurus, in the beginning of the fourth age; the nominal son of PA4N4D4U whom he succeeded in the sovereignty of India, but according to the legend, begotten on Kunti by the deity YAMA. E. युधि in war or battle, and ष्ठिर for स्थिर firm; it is also sometimes read युद्धस्थिर |

युधिष्ठिरः [yudhiṣṭhirḥ], 'Firm in battle', N. of the eldest Pāṇḍava prince, also called 'Dharma', 'Dharmarāja', 'Ajātaśatru' &c. [He was begotten on Kuntī by the god Yama. He is known more for his truthfulness and righteousness than for any military achievements or feats of arms. He was formally crowned emperor of Hastināpura at the conclusion of the great Bhāratī war after eighteen days' severe fighting, and reigned righteously for many years. Addressing of the assembly on his desire to perform the राजसूय, कृष्ण asked him to get ready by defeating all the kings and bringing thus all the earth under his control: sent out his brothers in the four directions who defeated kings and brought much wealth. Was glad of जरासन्ध's death at the hands of his brothers: Sent for Purohitas for the sacrifice and invited all his kith and kin. The यज्ञ comparable to that of वरुण; attended by all gods. For doing honour to the सदस्यस् there was some doubt about the first place, and Sahadeva's suggestion of कृष्ण's name was accepted by all except शिशुपाल who insulted him in the public assembly. कृष्ण's silence. The पाण्डवस् with the Matsyas and others unsheathed their swords, and कृष्ण sent his चक्र which cut off his head. After अवभृत, युधिष्ठिर shone like Indra. All took leave of him in joy except Duryodhana, who became jealous of the success of the राजसूय and of द्रौपदी, and of कृष्ण. Heard of Duryodhana's fall in the सभा and sent कृष्ण with dress and ornaments to him, which he rejected. फलकम्:F3: Ib.
