युवनाश्वः, पुं, सूर्य्यवंशीयराजविशेषः । स च गौरीगर्भे प्रसेनजितो जातः मान्धातृपिता च । यथा, -- “तस्याः प्रसेनजिज्जज्ञे लेभे भार्य्या पतिव्रता । गौरी नामाभिशप्ता सा नदीभूता तरङ्गिणी । तस्यां प्रसेनजिज्जज्ञे युवनाश्वं महीपतिम् ॥ यावत् सूर्य्य उदेति स्म यावच्च प्रतितिष्ठति । सर्व्वं तद्यौवनाश्वस्य मान्धातुः क्षेत्रमुच्यते ॥” इति वह्निपुराणे सगरोपाख्यानाध्यायः ॥

(I)--a son of Candra, (Indu) and father of श्राव. भा. IX. 6. २०-21; M. १२. २९.
(II)--a righteous king and a son of (Pra) सेनाजित्: Issueless though he had a hundred wives of whom गौरी was one; went to the forest, where he got up the Aindra इष्टि, a sacrifice in honour of Indra. One night he felt thirsty and drank the consecrated water from the sacri- ficial pot. In due time a son was born splitting open the right side of his stomach. He lived for some time and went to Heaven. This son was the great मान्धात (s.v.). भा. IX. 6. २५-32; 7. 1; Br. III. ६३. ६६; वा. ८८. ६५; Vi. IV. 2. ४८-63.
(III)--An Angirasa and मन्त्रकृत्. By his curse half the Ganges came out. Br. II. ३२. १०८; III. ६६. २९; वा. ५९. ९९. [page३-035+ २८]
(IV)--a son of Andhra. Br. III. ६३. २७; वा. ८८. २६.
(V)--the son of अम्बरीष, wife नर्मदा, and son सम्भूत (Harita-वा। प्। and वि। प्।). Br. III. ६३. ७३; वा. ८८. ७३; Vi. IV. 3. 2-3.
(VI)--during his यज्ञ, there were differen- ces as to the division of पशु। ब्रह्मा interfered and appeased while शक्ति got angry. Br. IV. 6. ५९.
(VII)--a son of रणाश्व and father of मन्धात; a मन्त्रकृत्. M. १२. ३४; १४५. १०२.
(VIII)--a son of शूलि of the २४थ् dva1para. वा. २३. २०७.

YUVANĀŚVA I : A King of the Ikṣvāku dynasty.

1) Genealogy. From Viṣṇu were descended in the following order:--Brahmā-Marīci-Kaśyapa-Vivasvān- Vaivasvata Manu-Ikṣvāku-Vikukṣi-Śaśāda-Kakutstha (Purañjaya)-Anenas-Pṛthulāśva-Prasenajit-Yuvanāśva. This Yuvanāśva was the father of Māndhātā.

2) Other details.

(i) Yuvanāśva performed many Yāgas. (M.B. Vana Parva, Chapter 126, Verse 5).

(ii) Once he drank water which had been subjected to special mantras (incantations) and as a result he be- came pregnant. Māndhātā was born by cutting open his belly. (For more details see under Māndhātā).

(iii) Yuvanāśva once received a wonderful sword from King Raivata. He presented that sword to King Raghu. (M.B. Śānti Parva, Chapter 166, Verse 78).

(iv) In Mahābhārata, Anuśāsana Parva, Chapter 115, Verse 61, it is stated that he had received “Parāvarata- ttva” (ability to know the highest and the lowest) be- cause he had renounced meat-eating.

YUVANĀŚVA II : Another Yuvanāśva was the grand- son of Viṣvagaśva of the Ikṣvāku dynasty and the son of Adri. This Yuvanāśva was the father of King Śrāva. (M.B. Vana Parva, Chapter 202, Verse 3).

YUVANĀŚVA III : Mahābhārata, Śānti Parva, Chapter 234, Verse 15, refers to another Yuvanāśva who was the son of Vṛṣadarbha. He attained Heaven by offering gifts of jewels, women and dwelling houses.

YUVANĀŚVA IV : A King of the Ikṣvāku dynasty who was the grandson of Māndhātā. There is reference to him in the Ṛgveda. (Ṛgveda, 10; 134).
