पृष्ठभागोऽयं यन्त्रेण केनचित् काले काले मार्जयित्वा यथास्रोतः परिवर्तयिष्यते। तेन मा भूदत्र शोधनसम्भ्रमः। सज्जनैः मूलमेव शोध्यताम्।

रघुः, पुं, (लङ्घति ज्ञानसीमां प्राप्नोतीति । लङ्घि + “लङ्घिबंह्योर्नलोपश्च ।” उणा० १ । ३० । इति कुः नलोपश्च । “बालमूललघ्वसुराल- मङ्गुलीनां वा लो रत्वमापद्यते इति वक्त्यवम् ।” ८ । २ । १८ । इति काशिकोक्त्या लस्य रत्वम् । इत्युज्ज्वलदत्तः ।) सूर्य्यवंशीयदिलीपराजपुत्त्रः । स तु अयोध्याधिपतिः । श्रीरामचन्द्रस्य प्रपिता- महः । यथा, रघुः । ३ । १८ । “स जातकर्म्मण्यखिले तपस्विना तपोवनादेत्य पुरोधसा कृते । दिलीपसूनुर्म्मणिराकरोद्भवः प्रयुक्तसंस्कार इवाधिकं बभौ ॥” तन्नामव्युत्पत्तिर्यथा, -- “श्रुतस्य यायादयमन्तमर्भक- स्तथा परेषां युधि चेति पार्थिवः । अवेक्ष्य धातोर्गमनार्थमर्थ-वि- च्चकार नाम्ना रघुमात्मसम्भवम् ॥” इति रघुवंशे महाकाव्ये । ३ । २१ ॥ (अस्य पिता दिलीपः माता सुदक्षिणा । अयं हि अश्वमेधयज्ञदीक्षितस्य पितुर्यज्ञीयाश्वरक्षणे नियुक्तस्तदश्वहारिणं देवराजं जितवान् । अथ बहुकालं राज्यसुखमनुभूय विश्वजिन्नामाध्वरे सर्व्वं वित्तं ब्राह्मणसात् कृतवानपि गुरुदक्षिणा- र्थिना वरतन्तुशिष्येण कौत्सेनाभ्यर्थितः कुबेरं विजित्य धनान्यादाय तस्मै प्रदत्तवान् । अथ स्वपुत्त्रमजं यौवराज्येऽभिषिच्य विगतविषयाभि- लाषो योगसमाधिना भगवत्-सायुज्यमाप्तवान् । तथा च रघुवंशे । ८ सर्गे । “अथ वीक्ष्य रघुः प्रतिष्ठितं प्रकृतिष्वात्मजमात्मवत्तथा । विषयेषु विनाशधर्म्मसु त्रिदिवस्थेष्वपि निःस्पृहोऽभवत् ॥” “अथ काश्चिदजव्यपेक्षया गमयित्वा समदर्शनः समाः । तमसः परमापदव्ययं पुरुषं योगसभाधिना रघुः ॥” * ॥ भीमादिवदेकदेशग्रहणे रघुवंशकाव्यम् । यथा, “रघुरपि काव्यं तदपि च पाठ्यम् तस्य च टीका सापि च पाठ्या ॥” एवं “रघोः काव्यं पदे पदे ॥” एतावुद्भटौ ॥ अपि च । “रञ्जयतीति । राजा प्रभुः । तेन ‘राजा प्रकृतिरञ्जनात् ।’ इति रघुः ।” इति उणादि- वृत्तौ उज्ज्वलदत्तः । १ । १५६ ॥ * ॥ रघु- वंशीयमात्रम् । तत्र बहुवचनान्तः । यथा, रघुवंशे । १ । ९ । “रघूणामन्वयं वक्ष्ये तनुवाग्विभवोऽपि सन् ॥” लङ्घति द्रुतं गच्छतीति । शीघ्रगामिनि, त्रि । यथा, ऋग्वेदे । ५ । ३० । १४ । “अत्यो न वाजी रघुरज्यमानः ॥” “रघुः शीघ्रगामी ।” इति तद्भाष्ये सायणः ॥”)

घुः N. of a celebrated king of the solar race, son of Dilīpa and father of Aja. [He appears to have been called Raghu from ragh orraṅgh 'to go', because his father foresaw that the boy would 'go' to the end of the holy learning as well as of his enemies in battle; cf. R.3.21. True to his name, he commenced the conquest of the directions, went over the whole of the then known world, overcame kings in battle, and returned covered with glory and laden with spoils. He then performed the Viśvajit sacrifice in which he gave away everything to Brāhmaṇas and made his son Aja successor to the throne.]

RAGHU :

1) General. A famous king of the Solar dynasty. The great king Dilīpa was his father. (For Genealogy, birth etc., see under Daśaratha and Dilīpa).

2) Other information.

(i) Raghu also occupies a place in the list of famous kings of ancient days. (Ādi Parva, Chapter 1, Verse 232).

(ii) In the fight between the king of Virāṭa and the Kauravas (over the lifting of cows) Raghu was present along with Indra to see Arjuna fight. (Virāṭa Parva, Chapter 56, Verse 10).

(iii) Raghu got from King Yuvanāśva a sword, which he presented to Hariṇāśva. (Śānti Parva Chapter 166, Verse 78).

(iv) He did not eat flesh. (Anuśāsana Parva, Chapter 150, Verse 81).

(v) Kṣatriyas who praise Raghu will not be defeated in war. (Anuśāsana Parva, Chapter 165, Verse 51).

(vi) In the list of kings to be remembered at dawn and at dusk Raghu too is included. (Anuśāsana Parva, Chapter 165, Verse 51).
