पृष्ठभागोऽयं यन्त्रेण केनचित् काले काले मार्जयित्वा यथास्रोतः परिवर्तयिष्यते। तेन मा भूदत्र शोधनसम्भ्रमः। सज्जनैः मूलमेव शोध्यताम्।

वारुणम्, क्ली, (वरुणो देवतास्येति । वरुण + अण् ।) जलम् । इति राजनिर्घण्टः ॥ (शत- भिषानक्षत्रम् । यथा, तिथितत्त्वे । “वारुणेन समायुक्ता मधौ कृष्णा त्रयोदशी । गङ्गायां यदि लभ्येत सूर्य्यग्रहशतैः समा ॥” उपपुराणविशेषः । यथा, देवीभागवते । १ । ३ । १५ । “वारुणं कालिकाख्यञ्च शाम्बं नन्दिकृतं शुभम् । सौरं पाराशरप्रोक्तमादित्यं चातिबिस्तरम् ॥” पुं, भारतस्य खण्डविशेषः । यथा, विष्णुपुराणे । २ । ३ । ६ । “इन्द्रद्वीपस्तथा सौम्यो गन्धर्व्वस्त्वथ बारुणः ॥”) वरुणसम्बन्धिनि, त्रि । यथा, -- “पश्चिमे पुष्पदन्तञ्च वारुणञ्च प्रशस्यते । उत्तरेण तु भल्लाटं सौम्यञ्च शुभदं भवेत् ॥ उडुम्बरस्तथा याम्ये वारुणे पिप्पलः शुभः । प्लक्षश्चोत्तरतो धन्यो विपरीतास्त्वसिद्ध्वये ॥” इति मात्स्ये २२९ अध्यायः ॥ (यथा च महाभारते । ३ । १०२ । १ । “समुद्रं ते समाश्रित्य वारुणं निधिमम्भसाम् । कालेयाः संप्रवर्त्तन्ते त्रैलोक्यस्य विनाशने ॥”)

Watery, marine; जानामि वारुणाँ- ल्लोकान् Rām.4.58.13; पृथिवी पर्वता मेघा मूर्तिमन्तश्च ये परे । सर्वं तद्वारुणं ज्ञेयमापस्तस्तम्भिरे यतः ॥ Mb.12.183.4.

Western.

णः N. of one of the nine divisions of Bharatavarṣa -2 An aquatic animal.

णम् Water.

The शतभिषज् constellation; नक्षत्रे वारुणे कुर्वन् भिषक्सिद्धिमवाप्नुयात् Mb.13.89.12. -णः, -णम् The west. -Comp. -कर्मन् n. any work connected with the supply of water. -पाशकः a sea-monster. -व्रतम् summary or immediate action; cf. तथा पापन्निगृह्णीयाद् व्रतमेतद्धि वारुणम् Ms.9.38.

Prajāpati in a previous age got it for Indra; the ocean (kalaśodadhi) brought it for Yudhiṣṭhira for his anointment at the Rājasūya (kalaśodadhiḥ samudraḥ Nī. on Bom. Ed. 2. 53. 15; however Nī. on Bom. Ed. 2. 49. 26. kalaśa iva kalaśo jalapūrṇatvāt samudraḥ/…anye tu kalaśodadhiḥ samudraḥ); it was well-fashioned by Viśvakarman and was set with a thousand niṣkas (siktaṁ niṣkasahasreṇa sukṛtaṁ viśvakarmaṇā); with this Vāruṇa conch Kṛṣṇa anointed Yudhiṣṭhira 2. 49. 14-15; however, according to 2. 45. 26-27 the ocean (kalaśodadhi) brought a Vāruṇa drinking vessel made of brass (kāṁsyaṁ…vāruṇaṁ) to Yudhiṣṭhira; it was probably brought in a sling made of a thousand rukmas and adorned with many jewels 2. 45. 26-27.

Yama told Śaśabindu (13. 89. 1) that by offering a kāmya śrāddha under the nakṣatra Vāruṇa a physician became successful (nakṣatre vāruṇe kurvan bhiṣak siddhim avāpnuyāt) 13. 89. 12 (Nī. on Bom. Ed. vāruṇe śatabhiṣaji; unknown commentator: śatabhiṣāyām, see Ed.'s note on the stanza, Vol. 17, p. 1090). [See Śatabhiṣaj ]
