वाल्मीकिः, पुं, (वल्मीके भवः । वल्मीक + इञ् ।) भृगुवंशीयमुनिविशेषः । इति त्रिकाण्डशेषः ॥ यथा, -- “रावणान्तकरो राजा रघूणां वंशवर्द्धनः । वाल्मीकिर्यस्य चरितं चक्रे भार्गवसत्तमः ॥” इति मात्स्ये १२ अध्यायः ॥ (यथा वा काव्यादर्शभूमिकायाम् । “जाते जगति वाल्मीकौ कविरित्यभिधाभवत् । कवी इति ततो व्यासे कवयस्त्वयि दण्डिनि ॥”)

वाल्मीकि m. (incorrectly वाल्मिकि)N. of the celebrated author of the रामा-यण(so called , according to some , because when immersed in thought he allowed himself to be overrun with ants like an anthill ; he was no doubt a Brahman by birth and closely connected with the kings of अयोध्या; he collected the different songs and legendary tales relating to राम-चन्द्रand welded them into one continuous poem , to which later additions may have been made ; he is said to have invented the श्लोकmetre , and probably the language and style of Indian epic poetry owe their definite form to him ; according to one tradition he began life as a robber , but repenting be took himself to a hermitage on a hill in the district of Banda in Bundelkund , where he eventually received सीता, the wife of राम, when banished by her husband ; See. IW. 314 ; 315 etc. ) MBh. R. etc.
