शतद्रुः, स्त्री, (शतधा द्रवतीति । शत + द्रु । “शतेच” उणा० १ । ३६ । इति कुः ।) नदीविशेषः । शतलज् इति हिन्दी भाषा । सा हिमालया- दुत्पन्ना विपाशायां मिलिता । (अस्या नाम- निरुक्तिर्यथा, महाभारते । १ । १७८ । ९ । “शतधा विद्रुता यस्माच्छतद्रुरिति विश्रुता ॥”) तत्पर्य्यायः । शितद्रुः २ । इत्यमरः ॥ शुतुद्रिः ३ शतद्रूः ४ । पुत्त्रशोकसन्तप्तो वशिष्ठः कण्ठे शिलां बद्ध्वानद्यामस्यां प्रविष्टस्ततो भीत्या इयं शतधा द्रुता इति शतद्रुः । इति तट्टीकायां भरतः ॥ (एतद्वृत्तान्तस्तु महाभारते । १ । १७८ । अध्याये द्रष्टव्यः ॥) अस्या जलगुणाः । “शतद्रोर्विपाशायुजः सिन्धुनद्याः सुशीतं लघु स्वादु सर्व्वामयघ्नम् । जलं निर्म्मलं दीपनं पाचनञ्च प्रदत्ते बलं बुद्धिमेधायुषञ्च ॥” इति राजनिर्घण्टः ॥

“शोके बुद्धिं तदा चक्रे नचैकत्र व्यतिष्ठत। सो-ऽगच्छत् पर्वतांश्चैव सरितश्च सरांसि च। दृष्ट्वा स (वसिष्ठः)पुनरेवर्षिर्नर्दी हैमवतीं तदा। चण्डग्राहवतीं भीमांतस्याः स्रोतस्यपातयत्। सा तमग्निसमं विप्रमनुचिन्त्यसरिद्वरा। शतधा विद्रुता यस्माच्छतद्रुरिति विश्रुता। ततः स्थलगतं दृष्ट्वा तत्राप्यात्मानमात्मना। मर्त्तुं नशक्याभीत्युक्त्वा पुनरेवाश्रमं ययौ” भा॰ आ॰

" flowing in a -hhundred (or numerous) branches " , N. of a river now called the Sutlej (it is the most easterly of the five rivers of the Panjab , and rises in a lake [prob. मानसSarovar] on the हिमा-लयmountains ; flowing in a southwesterly direction for 550 miles , it unites with the विपाशाor Beas south-east of Amritsar [see विपाश्] , afterwards joining the Chenab and filling into the इन्दुs below Multan ; it is also called शुतु-द्रि, शुतु-द्रु, शित-द्रुetc. ) MBh. Location: Listed by Saṁjaya among the rivers of the Bhāratavarṣa; people used its water for drinking 6. 10. 14, 13; flowing from the Himavant (haimavatī) 1. 167. 8; the Bāhlīka (or the Āraṭṭa) country lies between the five rivers and Sindhu 8. 30. 11; the five rivers are Śatadru, Vipāśā, Irāvatī, Candrabhāgā and Vitastā 8. 30. 35-36; one has to cross the rivers Śatadru and Irāvatī to reach the Bāhlīka country (sā nūnam… mām anusmaratī śete bāhlikam…//śatadrukanadīṁ tīrtvā tāṁ ca ramyām irāvatīm/ gatvā svadeśam drakṣyāmi) 8. 30. 20-21.

D. Past events:

(1) Vasiṣṭha, grieved over the death of his sons, made attempts to end his life; once he threw himself in a river which later came to be known as Śatadru 1. 166. 39; 1. 167. 8;

(2) One of the rivers seen by Mārkaṇḍeya in the belly of the Bāla (3. 186. 83 = Nārāyaṇa 3. 187. 3) 3. 186. 93.


E. Importance:

(1) One of the rivers who wait upon Śiva for his bath (upasparśanahetos tvā samīpasthā upāsate) 13. 134. 12;

(2) Umā wanted to consult rivers, one of them being Śatadru, on strīdharma before expounding it to Śiva 13. 134. 13, 20; Umā thus wanted to honour them 13. 134. 14, 25;

(3) One of the rivers who, in bodily form (2. 9. 21), wait on Varuṇa in his Sabhā 2. 9. 19;
