शिशुपालः, पुं, चेदिदेशीयराजः । स तु कृष्णेन हतः । शिशुपालवधकाव्यं माघेन कृतमा तत्पर्य्यायः । दमधोषसुतः २ चैद्यः ३ चदि राड् ४ । इति जटाधरः ॥ शिशुपालकः ५ । इति त्रिकाण्डशेषः ॥ (यथा, भागवते । ७ । १० । ३८ । “ताविहाथ पुनर्जातौ शिशुपालकरूषजौ । हरौ वैरानुबन्धेन पश्यतस्ते समीयतुः ॥”)

शिशुपाल¦ m. (-लः) The sovereign of a country in the central part of India or Che4di, opposed to KRISHN4A and slain by him: his death forms the subject of one of the Hindu epic poems, thence named S4is4upa4la-Badha, by MA4GHA. E. शिशु a child, पाल who cherishes.

शिशुपाल/ शिशु--पाल m. " child-protector " , N. of the king of the चेदिs inhabiting a country in central India , probably the same as Bundelkhand(See. चेदि; he was son of दम-घोष, and is also called सुनीथ; his impiety in opposing the worship of कृष्णis described in the सभा-पर्वन्of the महा-भारत; when युधि-ष्ठिरwas about to perform a राजसूयsacrifice , numerous princes attended , and भीष्मproposed that especial honour should be paid to कृष्ण, who was also present , but शिशु-पालobjected , and after denouncing कृष्णas a contemptible person challenged him to fight , whereupon कृष्णstruck off his head with his discus ; the विष्णु-पुराणidentifies this impious monarch with the demons हिरण्य-कशिपुand रावण; his death forms the subject of माघ's celebrated poem called शिशुपाल-वध)

--a son of श्रुतश्रवस् and दमघोष; in pre- vious births, हिरण्यकशिपु killed by Narasimha and रावण (दशग्रीव) killed by राम; a hater of Hari but was shown grace by कृष्ण; फलकम्:F1: भा. Maitreya asked पराशर how it was that though he was killed by the Lords Nara- simha and राम, हिरण्यकशिपु did not attain salvation but was reborn as शिसुपाल, and how he attained it when killed by कृष्ण; पराशर replied that neither हिरण्यकशिपु nor रावण knew that Narasimha or राम were the अवतार्स् of विष्णु; शिशुपाल knew in his heart of hearts that कृष्ण was God विष्णु and welcomed death at his hands.
