सम्भवः, पुं, (सं + भू + अप् ।) हेतुः । उत्पत्तिः । (यथा, आर्य्यासप्तशत्याम् । ४५८ । “महता प्रियेण निर्म्मितमप्रियमपि सुभग ! सह्यतां याति । सुतसम्भवेन यौवनविनाशनं न खलु खेदाय ॥”) मेलकः । आधेयस्य आधारानतिरिक्तत्वम् । इति मेदिनी ॥ सङ्केतः । अपायः । इत्यजयः ॥ वर्त्तमानकल्पीयार्हद्भेदः । इति हेमचन्द्रः ॥

२ आधेयस्याधारे समा-वेशनयोग्यत्वरूपे व्यापारे

९ तत्प्रमाणे च तदेतन्मतम् तत्त्व-कौमुद्यां प्रदर्श्य
“सम्भवस्तु यथा खार्य्यां द्राणाढकप्र-स्थाद्यवगमः सचानुमानमेव खारीत्वं हि द्रोणाद्यवि-नामूतं प्रतीतं खार्य्यां द्रोणादिसत्त्वमव गमयतीति” अनु-नावान्तर्गतया प्रमाणान्तरत्वं दूषितम्। खारीत्वं खारी-परिमाणं महापरिमाणे स्वावान्तरपरिमाणसमाविशा-ऽनुभवसिद्धः तथा च खारीपरिमाणं द्रोणादिपरिमा-णव्यापकमिति व्यापकस्थित्या व्याप्यस्थितेरावश्यकत्वादनु-मानेनैव गतार्थतत्यर्थः।
“न चतुष्ट्रमैतिह्यार्थापत्तिसम्भ-वाभावप्रामाण्यात्” गौ॰ सू॰ भाष्ये सम्भवोनाम अविनाभाविनोऽर्थस्य सत्त्वग्रहणम्। यथा द्रोणस्य सत्त्वग्रहणात् आढकस्य सत्त्वाग्रहणम् एवम् आदकस्य सत्त्वग्र-हणात् प्रस्थादिसत्त्वग्रहणम्” उक्तम्। तद्वृत्तौ च
“अवि-नाभाववृत्त्या च सम्बद्धयोः समुदायसमुदायिनोः समुदायेन इतरस्य ग्रहणं सम्भवः तच्चानुमानमेव” इत्युक्तम्।
