उर्वशी¦ स्त्री उरून् अश्नुते वशीकरोति उरु + अश--क गौरा॰ङीष्। स्वर्गवेश्याभेदे। अप्सरोभेदाश्च अप्सरः शब्दे उक्ताःइयञ्च नारायणोरुं भित्त्वा जाता यथोक्तं हरिवं॰

“नारायणोरुं निर्भिद्य सम्भूता वरवर्णिनी। ऐलस्यदयिता देवी योषिद्रत्नं किमुर्वशी” ततश्च ऊरुं नारायणोरुंकारणत्वेनाश्नुते प्राप्नोति अश--क ङीष् पृ॰ ह्रस्वः। इतिविग्रहः। इयमेव पुरूरवसःपत्नी आसीत्।
“पुत्रोबुध-स्योत्तमवीर्यकर्मा पुरूरवा युस्य सुतो सुदेवः। तथैवपश्चाच्चकमे महात्मा पुरोर्वशीमप्सरसां वरिष्ठाम”

“तव पित्राभ्यनुज्ञातां स्वयञ्च गृहमागताम्। यस्मान्मां नाभिनन्देथाः क मवाणवशंगताम्। तस्मात्त्वंनर्त्तनः पार्थ! स्त्रीमध्ये मानवर्जितः। अपुमानितिविख्यातः षण्डवद्विचरिष्यसि”

उर्वशी [urvaśī], [उरून् महतो$पि अश्नुते वशीकरोति, उरु-अश्-क गौरा˚ ङीष् Tv.]

N. of a famous Apsaras or nymph of Indra's heaven who became the wife of Purūravas. [Urvaśī is frequently mentioned in the Ṛigveda; at her sight the seed of Mitra and Varuṇa fell down, from which arose Agastya and Va&siṣṭa; (see Agastya). Being cursed by Mitra and Varuṇa she came down to the world of mortals, and became the wife of Purūravas, whom she chanced to see while descending, and who made a very favourable impression upon her mind. She lived with him for some time, and went up to heaven at the expiration of her curse. Purūravas was sorely grieved at her loss, but succeeded in securing her company once more. She bore him a son named Āyus, and then left him forever. The account given in the Vikramorvaśīyam differs in many respects, where Indra is represented to have favoured Purūravas with her lifelong company though he had himself cursed her. Mythologically she is said to have sprung from the thigh of the sage Nārāyaṇa, q. v.] उर्वशी वै रुपिण्यप्सरसाम् Mbh.5.2.95; मर्त्तासश्चिदुर्वशीरकृप्रन् Av. 18.3.23; स्त्रीरत्नेषु ममोर्वशी प्रियतमा यूथे तवेयं वशा V.4.47.

उर्वशी f. (fr. उरुand 1. अश्, " to pervade " See. M.M. , Chips , vol. ii , p.99 ) , " widely extending " , N. of the dawn (personified as an अप्सरस्or heavenly nymph who became the wife of पुरू-रवस्) RV. AV. xviii , 3 , 23 VS. S3Br. Vikr. etc.

When after ६४ years she saw him naked one day, she left him. He looked for her and saw her at the R. Sarasvati playing with her friends. If one, who is well composed, goes to Urvaśī under the constellation Kṛttikā and bathes there in the Lauhitya tīrtha according to the rites, he obtains the fruit of the Punḍarīka sacrifice (urvaśīkṛttikāyoge gatvā yaḥ susamāhitaḥ/lauhitye vidhivat snātvā puṇḍarīkaphalaṁ labhet) 13. 26. 43; (for Urvaśī as one of the names of Gaṅgā, see 12. 29. 61).
