अङ्ग, त् क पदे । (अङ्गयति चेष्टयति अङ्ग + णिच् अच् ।) लक्ष्मणि । इति कविकल्पद्रुमः ॥ कण्ठ्य- वर्गतृतीयोपधः । पदं सङ्ख्यासंस्थानं । लक्ष्म चिह्नयुक्तक्रिया । तथा च । अर्थक्रियैव धातूनां कर्तृव्यापारलक्ष्मणा । आत्मनिष्ठं क्रियार्थत्वं धात्वर्थेष्वक्रियात्मसु ॥ इति बोपदेवः । अङ्गयति अङ्गापयति, इति दुर्गादासः ॥

अङ्ग, व्य सम्बोधनं । इत्यमरः ॥ (रामायणे, -- “अङ्गावेक्षस्व सौमित्रे कस्येमां मन्यसे चमूं” । पुनरर्थः ।

अङ्गम्, क्ली, शरीरादेरेकदेशः । आं इति हिन्दी- भाषा । तत्पर्य्यायः । अवयवः २ प्रतीकः ३ अप- घनः ४ । इत्यमरः ॥ गात्रं । (श्टङ्गारतिलके, -- “अङ्गानि चम्पकदलैः स विधाय धाता” ।) अप्रधानं । (साहित्यदर्पणे, -- “एक एव भवेदङ्गी शृङ्गारो वीर एव वा । अङ्गमन्ये रसाः सर्व्वे कार्य्यनिर्वहणेऽद्भुतं” ॥ उपायः । इति मेदिनी ॥ (अङ्ग्यते विषयो बुध्यते अनेन अङ्ग + करणे घञ् इति व्युत्पत्त्या) मनः । अङ्गं मनसि काये चेत्यमिधानान्तरदर्शनात् । यथा । “हिरण्यगर्भाङ्गभुवं मुनिं हरिरिति माघः” ॥ वेदाङ्गशास्त्राणि षट् । यथा, -- “शिक्षा कल्पो व्याकरणं निरुक्तं छन्दसां चयः । ज्योतिषामयनञ्चैव वेदाङ्गानि षडेव तु” ॥ शिक्षा १ कल्पः २ व्याकरणं ३ निरुक्तं ४ ज्यो- तिषं ५ छन्दः ६ । इत्यमरः ॥ अङ्गस्य लक्षणं यथा । तदीयप्रधानफलजनकव्यापारजनकत्वे सति तदीयप्रधानफलाजनकत्वं । इति तिथ्यादितत्त्व- टीका ॥

अङ्गः, पुं, स्वनामख्यातदेशः । इति हेमचन्द्रः ॥ मे- दिनीकारमते नित्यबहुवचनान्तशब्दोऽयं । देश- विशेषः । यथा, -- “वैद्यनाथं समास्भ्य भुवनेशान्तगं शिवे । तावदङ्गाभिधो देशो यात्रायां न हि दुंष्यते ॥ इति शक्तिसङ्गमतन्त्रे ७ पटलः ॥ (अयञ्च देशः सरष्वाः सङ्गमे अवस्थितः, अत्र महादेवस्य हुङ्कारेण कामस्य अङ्गत्यागात् अयं अङ्गनाम्ना ख्यातः । यथा रामायणे, -- “अनङ्ग इति विख्यातस्ततःप्रभृति राघव । स चाङ्गविषयः श्रीमान् यत्राङ्गं स मुमोच ह” ॥

“हिरण्यगर्भाङ्गभुवमिति” देहे
“हस्तेनस्पर्श तदङ्गमिन्द्र” इतिकुमा॰। अङ्गशब्दस्य चेष्टावदन्त्यावयविरूपावयविवाचित्वेऽपितदवयवेऽपि हस्तपादादौ व्यवहारः अवयवत्वसाम्यात्तेषाञ्च प्रत्यङ्गशब्देनापि व्यवहारः। तत्राङ्गशब्दस्यदेहार्थत्वे तदीयस्वरूपं तदवयवभेदाश्च सुश्रुते दर्शिताः। यथा
“शुक्रशोणितं गर्भाशयस्थमात्मप्रकृतिविकार-संमूर्च्छितं गर्भ इत्युच्यते तञ्च चेतनावस्थितं वायुर्विभ-जति, तेज एनं पचति, आपः क्लेदयन्ति, पृथिवीसंहन्त्याकाशं विवर्द्धयति। एवं विवर्द्धितः स यदाहस्तपादजिह्वाघ्राणकर्णनितम्बादिभिरङ्गैरुपेतस्तदा शरीर-मिति संज्ञां लभते तच्च षडङ्गं शाखाश्चतस्रो, मध्यं पञ्चमं,पष्ठं शिर इति।

“सर्व्वकार्य्यशरीरेषु मुक्त्वाङ्गस्कन्धपञ्चकमिति”
“मन्त्रो योधैवाधीरः सर्व्वाङ्गैः संवृतैरपीति” च माघः। प्रधानोपयोगिनि उपकरणे,
“फलवत्सन्निधावफलंनदङ्गमिति” मीमांसा।
“प्रधानस्याक्रिया यत्रसाङ्गं तत् क्रियते पुनः तदङ्गस्याक्रियायान्त्विति” स्मृतिः।
“हस्त्यश्वरथपादातं सेनाङ्गं स्याच्चतुष्टयमिति” सम्बोधने अव्य॰।

“अङ्गाधीशःस्वगेहे बुधगुरुकविभिः संयुतो वीक्षितो वेति” जातकम्। देशभेदे पु॰। तस्य विवरणम् अङ्गाधिपशब्दे।
“अङ्गेषुवङ्गेषु खसेषु योज्या” इति
“अङ्गवङ्गखसेष्वेवेति” च ज्योति-षम् अङ्गानां राजा आङ्गः बह्वर्थे अङ्गाः। अङ्गदेशे भवःअण्। आङ्गः। बह्वर्थे अङ्गाः। अङ्गेन देहेन निर्वृत्तःठक्। आङ्गिकः। अङ्गदेशस्तद्राजानो वा भक्तिरस्य अण्आङ्गः। अङ्गस्येदम् अङ्गीयः।

“इणः षीध्वं लुङ्लिटां धोऽङ्गादिति” पा॰। अङ्गादागतम् अण्। आङ्गः अङ्गनिमित्ते कार्य्ये
“वर्णा-दाङ्गं बलीय इति” परिभा॰। उपकारणानि च यथायथमुह्यानि दिङ्मात्रमत्रोच्यते। तत्र
“स्वाम्यमात्यसुहृत्कोषो राष्ट्रं दुर्गं बलानि च राज्याङ्गानीत्युक्तानि”
“स्वाम्य-मात्यौ पुरं राष्ट्रं कोषदण्डौ सुहृत्तथा। सप्त प्रकृतयोह्येताः सप्ताङ्गं राज्यमुच्यते” इत्युक्तानि राज्याङ्गानि। दर्शादौ च प्रयाजादीनि, वैदिककर्म्मणाञ्च तत्तत्क्रिया-कलापाः तत्तद्द्रव्याणि चाङ्गानि
“साङ्गाद्धि वैदिककर्मणःफलावश्यम्भाव इति” मीमा॰। वेदस्य व्याकरणादीनिअङ्गानि,
“शिक्षा कल्पो व्याकरणं निरुक्तं छन्दसाञ्चितिः। ज्योतिषामयनञ्चैव वेदाङ्गानि षडेव तु इति”। एतेषाञ्चलक्षणादिकमग्रे वक्ष्यते। एतेषां वेदार्थज्ञानोपयोगित्वा-दङ्गत्वम् अतएव श्रुतौ
“ब्राह्मणेन निष्कारणः षडङ्गः सरह-स्योवेदोध्येतव्य” इत्युक्तम् शिक्षायां तेषां वेदार्थज्ञनोपयो-गित्वा दङ्गत्वं दर्शितम् यथा
“छन्दः पादौ तु वेदस्य हस्तौ कल्पोऽथ पठ्यते। ज्योतिषाम-यनं चक्षुर्निरुक्तं श्रोत्रमुच्यते। शिक्षा घ्राणं तु वेदस्यंमुखं व्याकरणं स्मृतं तस्माद् साङ्गमधीत्यैव ब्रह्मलोके महीयतेइति” अतो वेदार्थज्ञानोपयोगितया एतेषां ग्रन्थानां वेदाङ्ग-त्वम्।
“द्वे विद्ये वेदितव्ये” इत्युपक्रम्य
“पराचापरा चतत्रापरा ऋग्वेदो यजुर्वेदः सामवेदोऽथर्ववेदः शिक्षा कल्पीव्याकरणं निरुक्तं छन्दोज्योतिषमिति सा परा ययाक्षर-मधिगम्यते” इति श्रुतौ व्याकरणादीनामपरविद्यात्वेनकीर्त्तनं
“तेषाञ्च साधनभूतधर्म्महेतुत्वात् षडङ्गसहितानांधर्म्मसाधनत्वेनापरविद्यात्वमिति” भाष्ये उक्तम्। आयु-र्वेदादीनामुपवेदत्वं न्यायादीनामुपाङ्गत्वं यथा च तेषांतथात्वं तथा तत्तच्छब्दे दर्शयिष्यते। [Page0073-a+ 38]( तथा ज्योतिषस्याङ्गानि नानाविधानि तत्र प्राधान्यात्त्रिविधानि यथोक्तं वराहसहितायाम्।
“ज्योतिःशास्त्र-मनेकभेदविषयं स्कन्धत्रयाधिष्ठितम् तत्कात्र्स्न्योप-नयस्य नाम मुनिभिः सङ्कीर्त्यते संहिता। स्कन्धे-ऽस्मिन् गणितेन या ग्रहगतिस्तन्त्राभिधानन्त्वसौं होरान्यो-ऽङ्गविनिश्चयश्च कथितः स्कन्धस्तृतीयोऽपरः” इति। ( नरपतिजयचर्य्यायान्तु षड्विधान्याङ्गानि समासेनोक्त्वातेषां विस्तारो दर्शितो यथा
“स्वरचक्राणि चक्राणि भूबलानि बलानि च। ज्योतिषंशकुनञ्चैव षडङ्गान्यत्र वच्म्यहम्॥ यामलेषु च सर्वेषु यान्यु-क्तानि स्वरोदये। विंशतिःस्वरचक्राणि तन्नामानि वदा-म्यहम्। मात्रावर्णो ग्रहोजीवो राशिर्भं पिण्डयोगकौ। द्वादशाब्दोद्भवञ्चक्रं वर्षायनर्तुमासकम्॥ पक्षाह नाडिकंचक्रन्तिथिवारर्क्षयोगकम्। तत्कालेन्दुफलङ्काष्ठास्वरन्देहो-द्भवन्तथा॥ (इति स्वरचक्रनामानि)। पूर्ब्बमुक्तेषु शास्त्रेषुमया ज्ञातानि यानि च चतुरशीतिश्चक्राणि तेषांनामानि वच्म्यहम्॥ एकाशीतिपदञ्चक्रं शतपत्रं नवां-शकम्। छत्रं सिंहासनं चक्रं कूर्म्मंपञ्चविधात्मकम्॥ भूर्देशं नगरं क्षेत्रं गृहकूर्मञ्च पञ्चकम्। पद्मचक्रं फणीशाख्यं राहुकालानलन्त्रिधा॥ सूर्य्यकालानलं चक्रं चन्द्र-कालानलन्तथा। घोरकालानलं प्रोक्तं गूढकालानलंबलम्॥ राशिसूर्य्यसमायोगे चक्रं कालानलं मतम्। संघट्टकं सप्त ज्ञेयं सप्त कालानलानि च॥ तिथिवारञ्चनक्षत्रं त्रिधा चैव कुलाकुलम्। कुम्भचक्वं द्विधा प्रोक्तं राशि-नक्षत्रसम्भवम्॥ प्रस्तारञ्चक्रवेधाख्यैः प्रभेदैस्तु चरन्द्विधा। भूचरं स्वेचरं, पान्यं नाडीचक्रं त्रिधा मतम्॥ कालचक्रंफणिद्वन्द्वं सूर्य्याख्यं चन्द्रजन्तथा। कविचक्रं द्विधा प्रोक्तंस्थानस्वाम्यृक्षपूर्ब्बकम्॥ खलकाख्यं द्विधा चैव कृत्तिकास्थानभादिकम्। कोटचक्राष्टकं प्रोक्तञ्चतुरस्नादिभेदतः॥ गजमश्वं रथं व्यूहं कुन्तं खड्गं छुरीन्धुनुः। सौरिं सेवांनरण्डिम्भम्पक्षिमार्गायवृश्चिकम्॥ सप्तरेखोद्भवञ्चक्रं पञ्च-रेखेन्दुभास्करम्। त्रिविध मात्रिकाचक्रं विजयं श्येनतो-रणम्॥ अहिलाङ्गलवीजोप्तिवर्षाख्यं सप्तनाडिकम्। चक्रं सांवत्सरञ्चैव स्थानचक्रं तथैव च॥ एतानि सर्व-चक्राणि ज्ञात्वा युद्धं समाचरेत्। जयेदिह न सन्देहोशक्रतुल्पेऽपि भूभुजि॥ (इति चक्रनामानि)। स्वरोदयैश्चचक्रैश्च शत्रुर्यत्र समीऽधिकः। तत्र युद्धे बलं ज्ञेयं भूबलैर्विज-यार्थिनाम्॥ तेषां नामान्यहं वक्ष्ये ख्यातानां ब्रह्मयामले[Page0073-b+ 38] चतुरशीतिसंख्यानां यद्बलेन जयी रणे॥ उड्डी जालन्धरीपूर्णा कामकीलैकवीरका। शिलिन्ध्री च महामारी क्षेत्र-पाली च वंशजा॥ रुद्रकालानला काली कालरेखानिरामया। जयलक्ष्मीर्महालक्ष्मीर्जया विजयभैरवी॥ बाली योगेश्वरी चण्डी जानुबन्धककर्त्तरी। शार्दूलीसिंहली तन्वी महामाया महेश्वरी॥ देवकोटी शिवा शक्तीधूम्रवाणा वराटिका। त्रिमुण्डा मत्सरी कपाली चानिला-नला। चन्द्रार्कबिम्बभूमी च ग्रहभूराशिलग्नगा॥ राहु-काला नलीभूमी स्वरभूमि र्द्विधा मता। रुद्रस्त्रिमासिकश्चैवराहुचाष्टविधस्तथा॥ चन्द्रः सप्तविधः सूर्य्यश्चतुर्द्धा योगिनीत्रिधा। कालबलन्त्रिभेदञ्च तिथिनक्षत्रवारजम्॥ इमानि भूबलान्यत्र ज्ञात्वा यः प्रविशेद्रणे। अरयस्तस्यनश्यन्ति मेघा वातहता यथा॥ (इति भूबलानि)। शत्रोःसमाधिके नाम्नि स्वरैश्चक्रैश्च भूबलैः। स्थानसेनाधिके शत्रौ-बलविज्ञानसंयुते॥ अभङ्गे चाप्यभेदे च दुःसाध्येदुर्जये-रिपौ। जयोपायमहं वक्ष्ये मन्त्रयन्त्रादिकं बलम्॥ रणाभिषेचनं दीक्षा रणार्चा रणकङ्कणम्। बीरपट्टं रणेपट्टंजयपट्टस्य बन्धनम्॥ मेखलाकवच न्यासं मुद्रारक्षां च कङ्क-णम्। औषधन्तिलकं घण्ठागुटिकां च कपर्द्दिकाम्॥ योगेघटितशस्त्राणि शस्त्ररक्षाय मोहनम्। शस्त्रलेपांश्चविविधान् वाणानाम्पिच्छबन्धनम्॥ शम्बलङ्काहलण्ढक्कांमुरुजम्भस्वधारणम्। मारणं मोहनं (बलाबलनामानि)। गणितं व्यवहारञ्च होरा-ज्ञानं परिस्फुटम्। त्रिस्कन्धं ज्योतिषं वक्ष्ये जयचर्य्यांस्वरोदये॥ खेचरानयनं स्पष्टं पञ्चाङ्गं तिथिसाधनम्। उदयास्तमनञ्चक्रक्रान्तिं वक्ष्ये यथामति॥ नतोन्मतप्रमाणञ्च-भावसन्धिप्रसाधनम्। ग्रहाणां षड्बलं वक्ष्ये राशिभावबला-न्वितम्॥ राशिसंज्ञाप्रभेदञ्च खेचराणां तथैव च। नॄणांजन्मफलं वक्ष्ये ऋक्षराश्यंशलग्नजम्॥ फलञ्चद्रार्कयोगानांग्रहाणां स्वोच्चनीचकम्। आयुर्द्दायं दशाश्चैव तासा-ङ्कालप्रवेशनम्॥ तस्माल्लग्नं ग्रहान्स्पष्टान्दशान्तर्द्दशयोः[Page0074-a+ 38] फलम्। ग्रहवर्गाष्टकं स्पष्टं तस्माद्दिनफलं वदेत्॥ ताजि-काज्जन्मलग्नस्य साधनञ्च परिस्फुटम्। A limb or member of the body; शेषाङ्गनिर्माणविधौ विधातुः Ku.1.33; क्लेशस्याङ्गमदत्वा Pt.5. 32 without undergoing troubles; इति स्वप्नोपमान्मत्वा कामान्मा गास्तदङ्गताम् । Ki.11.34 do not be influenced or swayed by them (do not be subject to them)

A division or department (of anything), a part or portion, as of a whole; as सप्ताङ्गम् राज्यम्, चतुरङ्गम् बलम्, चतुःषष्ट्ष्ट्यङ्गम् ज्योतिः- शास्त्रम् see the words; गीताङ्गानाम् Pt.5.56; यज्ञश्चेत्प्रतिरुद्धःस्या- देकेनाङ्गेन यज्वनः Ms.11.11. (Gram.) A name for the base of a word; यस्मात्प्रत्ययविधिस्तदादिप्रत्यये अङ्गम् P.I.4.13; यः प्रत्ययो यस्मात्क्रियते तदादिशब्दस्वरूपं तस्मिन्प्रत्यये परे अङ्गसंज्ञं स्यात् Sk. The अङ्ग terminations are those of the nominative, and accusative singular and dual.

(Drama) (a.) One of the sub-divisions of the five joints or sandhis in dramas; the मुख has 12, प्रतिमुख 13, गर्भ 12, विमर्ष 13 and उपसंहार 14, the total number of the angas being thus 64; for details see the words. (b.) The whole body of subordinate characters.

(astr.) A name for the position of stars (लग्न), See अङ्गाधीश.

A symbolical expression for the number six (derived from the six Vedāngas).

N. of the chief sacred texts of the jainas. -ङ्गः (pl.) N. of a country and the people inhabiting it, the country about the modern Bhāgalpur in Bengal. [It lay on the south of Kauśikī Kachchha and on the right bank of the Ganges. Its capital was Champā, sometimes called Aṅgapurī Lomapādapurī, Karṇapurī or Mālinī. According to Daṇḍin (अङ्गेषु गङ्गातटे बहिश्चम्पायाः) and Hiouen Thsang it stood on the Ganges about 24 miles west of a rocky island. General Cunningham has shown that this description applies to the hill opposite Pātharghāṭā, that it is 24 miles east of Bhāgalpur, and that there are villages called Champanagar and Champapura adjoininng the last. According to Sanskrit poets the country of the Aṅgas lay to the east of Girivraja, the capital of Magadha and to the northeast or south-east of Mithilā. The country was in ancient times ruled by Karṇa] cf. अङ्गं गात्रा- न्तिकोपाय प्रतीकेष्वप्रधानके । देशभेदे तु पुंसि स्यात्...॥ Nm. -a.

अधिपः, अधीशः lord of the Aṅgas, N. of Karṇa (cf. ˚राजः, ˚पतिः, ˚ईश्वरः, ˚अधीश्वरः).

'lord of a लग्न', the planet presiding over it; (अङ्गाधिपे बलिनि सर्वविभूतिसम्पत्; अङ्गाधीशः स्वगेहे बुधगुरुकविभिः संयुतो वीक्षितो वा Jyotiṣa). -अपूर्वम् effect of a secondary sacrificial act.-कर्मन् n.

भङ्गः palsy or paralysis of limbs; ˚विकल इव भूत्वा स्थास्यामि Ś.2.

Aṅga, Aṅgaka : m. (pl., also sg.), Aṅgaviṣaya m. (sg.): Name of a country and its people; often mentioned along with Vaṅga and Kaliṅga.


A. Location: Listed by Saṁjaya among the Janapadas of the Bhāratavarṣa (aṅgā vaṅgāḥ kaliṅgāś ca) 6. 10. 44, 5, 37; mentioned among the eastern countries, holy places in which were visited by Arjuna (prācīm diśam abhiprepsur jagāma) 1. 207. 5; (aṅgavaṅgakaliṅgeṣu yāni puṇyāni kānicit/jagāma tāni sarvāṇi) 1. 207. 9; the army protected by the king of the Aṅga country (Karṇa) said to be of the easterners (tad aṅgapatinā guptaṁ…prācyānām abhavad balam) 6. 17. 28.

(1) Lomapāda, a friend of Daśaratha, was the king of the Aṅgas (lomapāda iti khyāto aṅgānām īśvaro 'bhavat) 3. 110. 19; he, the king of the Aṅga country, called his ministers and consulted with them about the means to bring Ṛśyaśṛṅga to the Aṅga country; he asked the courtezans to get Ṛśyaśṛṅga from his āśrama to his country by some means (tato 'ṅgapatir āhūya sacivān…/yatnam akaron mantraṇiścaye...ṛśyaśṛṅgam…ānayadhvam viṣayaṁ mama śobhanāḥ//) 3. 110. 28, 31; the courtezans deluded Ṛśyaśṛṅga by various means and brought him to the ruler of the Aṅgas (pralobhayantyo vividhair upāyair ājagmur aṅgādhipateḥ samīpam) 3. 113. 8; enraged, Vibhāṇḍaka, father of Ṛśyaśṛṅga, started towards Campā to burn it along with the king and his (Aṅga) country (jagāma campāṁ pradidhakṣamāṇas tam aṅgarājaṁ viṣayaṁ ca tasya) 3. 113. 15; being honoured at various places on his way to Campā, Vibhāṇḍaka calmed down and, delighted, he approached the king of the Aṅgas in his town (samāsasādāṅgapatiṁ purastham) 3. 113. 18;

(6) Aṅga country mentioned among those which were conquered by Sahadeva before the Rājasūya (yaḥ kāśīn aṅgamagadhān…yudhājayat) 5. 49. 28 (however, according to 2. 27. 1618 it was Bhīma who subjugated Karṇa; in 2. 28 where Sahadeva's expedition is described there is no reference to the Aṅga country);

(7) The Kṣatriyas of the Aṅga and Vaṅga countries mentioned among those who brought riches by hundreds for the Rājasūya of Yudhiṣṭhira (aṅgā vaṅgāś ca puṇḍrāś ca…āhārṣuḥ kṣatriyā vittaṁ śataśaḥ) 2. 48. 15-16;

(13) Sahadeva, after killing the elephant of a Punḍra warrior, attacked the elephant of an Aṅga warrior; Nakula took on himself the fight with the Aṅga warrior and his elephant; the Aṅga warrior threw tomaras on Nakula; the warrior (here called mleccha and Ācāryaputra) fell down along with his elephant; at the death of this Aṅga warrior, other warriors from the Aṅga country with their elephants attacked Nakula (vivarmadhvajajīvitam/taṁ kṛtvā dviradaṁ bhūyaḥ sahadevo 'ṅgam abhyagāt//sahadevaṁ tu nakulo vārayitvāṅgam ārdayat/…aṅgaś cikṣepa tomarān/sa papāta hato mlecchas tenaiva saha dantinā//ācāryaputre nihate…aṅgāḥ kruddhā mahāmātrā nāgair nakulam abhyayuḥ) 8. 17. 13-18;

F. Past events:

(1) Lomapāda, a friend of Daśaratha, was the king of the Aṅgas (lomapāda iti khyāto aṅgānām īśvaro 'bhavat) 3. 110. 19; he, the king of the Aṅga country, called his ministers and consulted with them about the means to bring Ṛśyaśṛṅga to the Aṅga country; he asked the courtezans to get Ṛśyaśṛṅga from his āśrama to his country by some means (tato 'ṅgapatir āhūya sacivān…/yatnam akaron mantraṇiścaye...ṛśyaśṛṅgam…ānayadhvam viṣayaṁ mama śobhanāḥ//) 3. 110. 28, 31; the courtezans deluded Ṛśyaśṛṅga by various means and brought him to the ruler of the Aṅgas (pralobhayantyo vividhair upāyair ājagmur aṅgādhipateḥ samīpam) 3. 113. 8; enraged, Vibhāṇḍaka, father of Ṛśyaśṛṅga, started towards Campā to burn it along with the king and his (Aṅga) country (jagāma campāṁ pradidhakṣamāṇas tam aṅgarājaṁ viṣayaṁ ca tasya) 3. 113. 15; being honoured at various places on his way to Campā, Vibhāṇḍaka calmed down and, delighted, he approached the king of the Aṅgas in his town (samāsasādāṅgapatiṁ purastham) 3. 113. 18;

(2) Once, Vasuhoma was the king of the Aṅgas (aṅgeṣu rājā…vasuhoma iti śrutaḥ) 12. 122. 1;

(3) (Ruci, the wife of Devaśarman, once gathered flowers of heavenly fragrance that fell down near her āśrama 13. 40. 16; 13. 42. 7); just then she received an invitation from the Aṅga country where Prabhāvatī, the eldest sister of Ruci, was the wife of Citraratha, the king of the Aṅgas; Ruci put the heavenly flowers in her hair and went to the residence of the king of the Aṅgas; seeing those flowers Prabhāvatī, the wife of the chief of the Aṅgas, asked her sister for the flowers (tadā nimantrakas tasyā aṅgebhyaḥ kṣipram āgamat//tasyā hi bhaginī tāta jyeṣṭhā nāmnā prabhāvatī/ bhāryā citrarathasyātha babhūvāṅgeśvarasya vai//…āmantritā tato 'gacchad rucir aṅgapater gṛhān//puṣpāṇi tāni dṛṣṭvātha tadāṅgendravarāṅganā/bhaginīṁ codayām āsa puṣpārthe) 13. 42. 7-10;

(4) Once, the earth in rivalry with the king of the Aṅgas (not named) gave up her nature as earth and got lost; then the Brāhmaṇa Kaśyapa steadied her--this was told by Vāyu to Sahasrārjuna Kārtavīrya (tyaktvā mahītvaṁ bhūmis tu spardhayāṅganṛpasya ha/nāśaṁ jagāma tāṁ vipro vyaṣṭambhayata kaśyapaḥ//) 13. 138. 2.

Aṅga.--The name occurs only once in the Atharvaveda[१] in connection with the Gandhāris, Mūjavants, and Magadhas, as distinct peoples. They appear also in the Gopatha Brāhmaṇa[२] in the compound name Aṅga-magadhāḥ. As in later times they were settled on the Sone and Ganges,[३] their earlier seat was presumably there also.
