Madhu denotes anything sweet used as food, and especially drink, ‘mead,’[१] a sense often found in the Rigveda.[२] More precisely it denotes either ‘Soma’[३] or ‘milk,’[४] or less often ‘honey,’[५] which, however, is the most definite sense in the later literature. Taboos against the use of honey are recorded.[६]
