पृष्ठभागोऽयं यन्त्रेण केनचित् काले काले मार्जयित्वा यथास्रोतः परिवर्तयिष्यते। तेन मा भूदत्र शोधनसम्भ्रमः। सज्जनैः मूलमेव शोध्यताम्।

ममता, स्त्री, (मम + भावे तल् । टाप् ।) दर्पः । अभिमानः । इति हेमचन्द्रः । २ । २३१ ॥ ममत्वम् । यथा, -- “तथापि ममतावर्त्ते मोहगर्त्ते निपातिताः ॥” इति देवीमाहात्म्यम् ॥ (उतथ्यपत्नी । सा तु दीर्घतमोमाता । यथा, ऋग्वेदे । ६ । १० । २ । “स्तोमं यमस्मै ममतेव शूषं घृतं न शुचि मतयः पवन्ते ॥” “ममता नाम ब्रह्मवादिनी दीर्घतमसो माता ।” इति तद्भाष्ये सायनः ॥)

Pride, arrogance, self-sufficiency.

--the wife of the sage उशिज (Asija-वा। प्।), (Utathya वि। प्।) whose younger brother बृहस्पति wanted sexual union with her when she was pregnant eight months; he raped her, and cursed the baby in the womb which obstructed the completion of the act, to be ever in darkness, and hence the child was born blind, दीर्घतमस्; the result of the union was भरद्वाज; ममता, abandoned Bharad- वाज fearing divorce by her husband on account of the in- discret act of बृहस्पति (s.v.) see also दीर्घतमस्. भा. Mamatā is, according to Sāyaṇa, in one passage of the Rigveda, the wife of Ucathya and the mother of Dīrghatamas. But the word may be merely an abstract noun meaning ‘selfinterest,’ a sense which it often has in the later language. Oldenberg finds a mention of Mamata (masc.) in a verse of the Rigveda as the name of a Bharadvāja.
