पृष्ठभागोऽयं यन्त्रेण केनचित् काले काले मार्जयित्वा यथास्रोतः परिवर्तयिष्यते। तेन मा भूदत्र शोधनसम्भ्रमः। सज्जनैः मूलमेव शोध्यताम्।

मैत्रेयः, पुं, (मैत्रे मित्रतायां साधुरिति । मैत्र + ढञ् ।) बुद्धभेदः । इति त्रिकाण्डशेषः ॥ (मित्रयोः अपत्यमिति । मित्रयु + “गृष्ट्यादि- भ्यश्च ।” ४ । १ । १३६ । इति ढञ् । ततः “केकयमित्रयुप्रलयानां यादेरियः ।” ७ । ३ । २ । इति युस्थाने इयादेशे प्राप्ते । “दाण्डिनायन- हास्तिनायन ।” ६ । ४ । १७४ । इति युलोपो निपातितः ।) मुनिविशेषः । यथा, -- “एवं ब्रुवाणं मैत्रेयं द्वैपायनसुतो बुधः । प्रीणयन्निव भारत्या विदुरः प्रत्यभाषत ॥” इति श्रीभागवते । ३ । ७ । १ ॥ (सूर्य्यः । यथा, महाभारते । ३ । ३ । २७ । “देहकर्त्ता प्रशान्तात्मा विश्वात्मा विश्वतोमुखः । चराचरात्मा सूक्ष्मात्मा मैत्रेयः करुणान्वितः ॥” वर्णसं करजातिविशेषः । यथा, मनुसंहिता- याम् । १० । ३३ । “मैत्रेयकन्तु वैदेहो माधूकं सम्प्रसूयते । नॄन् प्रशंसत्यजस्रं यो घण्टाताडोऽरुणोदये ॥” “मैत्रेयकं नाम्ना वर्णम् ।” इति तत्र मेधातिथिः ॥ स्त्री । मैत्रेयेन उच्चारिता मैत्रेयी उपनिषद् ॥ याज्ञवल्कस्य पत्नी च ॥) मित्रसम्बन्धिनि, त्रि ॥ (मित्रयुवंशोद्भवादौ च । यथा, हरिवंशे । ३२ । ७७ -- ७८ । “अत ऊर्द्ध्वं प्रवक्ष्यामि दिवोदासस्य सन्ततिम् । दिवोदासस्य दायादो ब्रह्मर्षिर्मित्रयुर्नृपः । मैत्रायणी ततः शाखा मैत्रेयास्तु ततः स्मृताः ॥”)

मैत्रेय¦ mfn. (-यः-यी-यं) Of or relating to a friend. m. (-यः)
1. A man of a mixed caste, the son of a Vaideha by an Ayogava mother: his business is to announce the hours in verse.
2. The seventh Bud- d'ha, or one still to come.
3. The name of a saint or Muni, the disciple of PARA4SARA, to whom the Vishn4u Pura4na is narra- ted. E. मित्र a proper name, or मित्र a friend, and ढक् aff. of descent or relation.

MAITREYA : A sage of great brilliance of ancient India.

1) Genealogy. Descending in order from Viṣṇu:-- Brahmā--Atri--Candra--Budha--Purūravas--Āyus-- Anenas--Pratikṣatra--Sṛñjaya--Jaya--Vijaya--Kṛti-- Haryaśva--Sahadeva--Nadīna--Jayasena--Saṅkṛti-- Kṣatradharmā--Sumagotra--Śala--Ārṣṭiṣena--Kośa-- Dīrghatapas--Dhanvantari--Ketumān--Bhīmaratha-- Divodāsa--Maitreya.

Somapa was born as the son of Maitreya.

2) Other details.

(i) Once Maitreya went to Hastināpura and told Duryodhana that he should behave kindly to the Pāṇḍavas. Duryodhana who did not much relish the advice sat tapping on his thighs with his hands, not seriously attending to the sage. Maitreya was dis- pleased at the discourtesy and cursed that Bhīma would one day break Duryodhana's thighs. (See under Duryodhana).

(ii) Maitreya was a courtier of Yudhiṣṭhira. (Śloka 10, Chapter 4, Sabhā Parva).

(iii) Maitreya was one among the sages who visited Bhīṣma while he was lying on his bed of arrows. (Śloka 6, Chapter 43, Śānti Parva).

(iv) Once he discussed with Vyāsa topics on Dharma. (Chapter 120, Anuśāsana Parva).

(v) When Srī Kṛṣṇa died, the spiritualistic ideology of Dharmaputra became more dominant and he approach- ed Vidura for Dharmopadeśa. Vidura sent him to Maitreya. Dharmaputra went to the Āśrama of Maitreya on the banks of the river Gaṅgā and after paying respects to him accepted Dharmopadeśa (Instruction in law, duty and morals) from him. (3rd Skandha, Bhāgavata).

Maitreya is the patronymic or metronymic of Kauṣārava in the Aitareya Brāhmaṇa. It is also applied to Glāva in the Chāndogya Upaniṣad.
