वेदाङ्गम्, क्लो, (वेदस्य अङ्गम् ।) श्रुत्यवयवषट्- प्रकारशास्त्रम् । तद्यथा । शिक्षा १ कल्पः २ व्याकरणम् ३ निरुक्तम् ४ ज्योतिषम् ५ छन्दः ६ । यदुक्तम् । “शिक्षा कल्पो व्याकरणं निरुक्तं ज्योतिषां गणः । छन्दोविचितिरित्येतैः षडङ्गो वेद उच्यते ॥” इति ॥ तत्र अकारादिवर्णानां स्थूलकरणप्रयत्नबोधिका अकु ए ह विसर्ज्जनीयाः कण्ठ्या इत्यादिका शिक्षा । यागक्रियाणामुपदेशः कल्पः । साधु- शब्दान्वाख्यानं व्याकरणम् । वर्णागमो वर्ण- विपर्य्ययश्च इत्यादिना निश्चयेनोक्तं निरुक्तम् । ग्रहणादिगणनशास्त्रं ज्योतिः । श्रुतिच्छन्दसां प्रत्यायकं शास्त्रं छन्दोविचितिः । इत्यमर- भरतौ ॥ (यथा, मनुः । ४ । ९८ । “वेदाङ्गानि च सर्व्वाणि कृष्णपक्षेषु सम्पठेत् ॥”)

वेदाङ्ग¦ न॰ वेदस्याङ्गमिव।
“शिक्षा कल्पो व्याकरणं नि-रुक्तं छन्दसां चयः। ज्योतिषामयनञ्चैव वेदाङ्गानिषडेव तु” इत्युक्तेषु शिक्षादिषु षट्सु शास्त्रेषु। तेषाम-ङ्गविशेषरूपत्वं शिक्षायामुक्तं यथा
“छन्दः पादौ तु वेदस्य हस्तौ कल्पोऽथ पठ्यते। ज्यो-तिषामयमं चक्षुर्निरुक्तं श्रोत्रमुच्यते। शिक्षा घ्राणं तुवेदस्य मुखं व्याकरणं स्मृतम्। तस्मात् साङ्गमधीत्यैवब्रह्मलोके महीयते”।

वेदाङ्ग¦ m. (-ङ्गः) A sacred science, considered as subordinate to, and in some sense, a part of the Ve4das: six sciences come under this denomination; S4IKSHA4, or the science of pronunciation and articu- lation; KALPA, the detail of religious ceremonies; VYA4KARAN4A, or grammar; CH'HANDAS, prosody; JYOTISH, or astronomy; and NI- RUKTI4, or the explanation of the difficult or obscure words and phrases that occur in the Ve4das. E. वेद the Ve4das, अङ्ग a member.

वेदाङ्ग/ वेदा n. " a limb (for preserving the body) of the वेद" , N. of certain works or classes of works regarded as auxiliary to and even in some sense as part of the वेद, (six are usually enumerated [and mostly written in the सूत्रor aphoristic style] ; 1. शिक्षा, " the science of proper articulation and pronunciation " , comprising the knowledge of letters , accents , quantity , the use of the organs of pronunciation , and phonetics generally , but especially the laws of euphony peculiar to the वेद[many short treatises and a chapter of the तैत्तिरीय-आरण्यकare regarded as the representatives of this subject ; but other works on Vedic phonetics may be included under it See. प्रातिशाख्य]: 2. छन्दस्, " metre " [represented by a treatise ascribed to पिङ्गल-नाग, which , however , treats of Prakrit as well as Sanskrit metres , and includes only a few of the leading Vedic metres]: 3. व्याकरण, " linguistic analysis or grammar " [represented by पाणिनि's celebrated सूत्रs]: 4. निरुक्त, " explanation of difficult Vedic words " [See. यास्क]: 5. ज्योतिष, " astronomy " , or rather the Vedic calendar [represented by a small tract , the object of which is to fix the most auspicious days for sacrifices]: 6. कल्प, " ceremonial " , represented by a large number of सूत्रworks [See. सूत्र]: the first and second of these वेदा-ङ्गs are said to be intended to secure the correct reading or recitation of the वेद, the third and fourth the understanding of it , and the fifth and sixth its proper employment at sacrifices: the वेदा-ङ्गs are alluded to by मनु, who calls them , in iii , 184 , प्रवचनs , " expositions " , a term which is said to be also applied to the ब्राह्मणs) IW. 145 etc.

Vedāṅga, as the name of a text subsidiary to the study of the Rigveda, is first found in the Nirukta[१] and the Rigveda Prātiśākhya.[२]
