Śiprā is a word of somewhat uncertain sense: it seems to mean ‘cheeks’ in several passages;[१] in others[२] it appears to designate the ‘cheek-pieces’ of a helmet, or of the ‘bit’[३] of a horse. In ayaḥ-śipra, used of the Aśvins,[४] and the other compounds, hiraṇya-śipra,[५] hari-śipra,[६] and hiri-śipra,[७] the word probably has the extended sense of ‘helmet,’ described as ‘of iron,’ ‘of gold,’ or ‘yellow,’ Similarly śiprin[८] would mean ‘wearing a helmet.’
