AUŚIJA I : A King of ancient India. He equalled Indra. (Śloka 226, Chapter 1, Ādi Parva, M.B.).

AUŚIJA II : An ancient sage. There is a reference to this sage who is the son of Aṅgiras in Ṛgveda. This ṛṣi was a brilliant member of the royal council of Dharma- putra. (Chapter 208, Śānti Parva, M.B.).

Auśija, ‘descendant of Uśij,’ is a patronymic clearly applied to Kakṣīvant in the Rigveda.[१] It is also applied to Ṛjiśvan,[२] but Ludwig[३] thinks that the correct reading of the passage in question is auśijasyarjiśvā, ‘Ṛjiśvan, son of Auśija.’ In one verse[४] Auśija and Kakṣīvant are both mentioned, but in such a way that two different persons must apparently be meant. In other passages where the patronymic occurs alone, it is doubtful who is meant, or whether a proper name at all is intended.[५] Kakṣīvant Auśija appears also in the Pañcaviṃśa Brāhmaṇa[६] and elsewhere.
