KHARA I : A giant (Rākṣasa). Khara and Atikāya were the rebirths of Madhu and Kaiṭabha. For details see under Kaiṭabha and Atikāya.

1) Birth and genealogy. Mahābhārata mentions as follows about the birth of this giant:--Viśravas was born from Pulastya the son of Brahmā. Kubera was born from Viśravas. Kubera ruled over Laṅkā. Viśravas who had no one to help him once looked with anger at Kubera, who, understanding the wish of his father gave him three giantesses named Puṣpotkaṭā, Rākā and Mālinī as attendants. They attended on him faithfully and Viśravas was pleased with them. To Viśravas two sons named Rāvaṇa and Kumbhakarṇa were born by Puṣpotkaṭā, Vibhīṣaṇa was born by Mālinī and the twin sister and brother Śūrpaṇakhā and Khara were born by Rākā. By and by Khara became a famous archer. Rāvaṇa, Kumbhakarṇa and Vibhīṣaṇa perform- ed penance to obtain boons and Khara and Śūrpa- ṇakhā stayed with them to serve them. (M.B. Vana Parva, Chapter 275).

2) Other brothers. Khara had two other brothers Dūṣaṇa and Triśiras. (Uttara Rāmāyaṇa).

3) The slaughter of Khara. While Śrī Rāma, Sītā and Lakṣmaṇa were staying in the forest of Daṇḍakāraṇya Śūrpaṇakhā the sister of Khara came there once and tried to get one of the brothers Śrī Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa as her husband. Lakṣmaṇa cut off her nose and ears. She went to Khara, Dūṣaṇa and Triśiras and lamented before them. The three of them immediately started with an army of fourteen thousand giants and fought with Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, who killed every one of them. (Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Araṇyakāṇḍa, Sargas 19 to 30).

KHARA II : Another giant who helped Rāvaṇa in the battle between Rāma and Rāvaṇa. In Mahābhārata, Vana Parva, Chapter 285, Stanza 2, it is said that “Parvaṇa, Patana, Jambha, Khara, Krodhavaśa, Hari, Praruja, Aruja, Praghasa and others fought with Rāma.

Khara, ‘ass,’ is mentioned in the Aitareya Āraṇyaka, where a team of asses is alluded to. Probably the passages in the Satapatha Brāhmaṇa, where the word is used to denote an earth mound on which the sacrificial vessels were placed, presuppose the sense of ‘ass,’ the mound being shaped in this form.

(सोम के) प्यालों को रखने के लिए प्रयुक्त मिट्टी से निर्मित, बालुका से ढका हुआ (भद्दा) छोटा वर्गाकार टीला आप.श्रौ.सू. 11.13.8, का.श्रौ.सू. 8.5.29 (खरं पुरस्तात्करोत्युद्धतावोक्षिते सिकतोपकीर्णं चतुरस्रम्) इसे हविराधान में हविराधान-शकट के सामने दक्षिण में ‘उपरव’-संज्ञक गड्ढों से निकाली गई मिट्टी से उठाते हैं (बनाते हैं), आप.श्रौ.सू.। बालुका-निर्मित हो और खर प्राचीन वंश के अन्दर ही प्रवर्ग्य के लिए बनाये जाते हैं, आकृति में चक्राकार, 1 बीते (बित्ते) के आकार वाले; एक उस गार्हपत्य के उत्तर जो प्रवृज्जनीय कहलाता है और जिस पर महावीर पात्र रखा जाता है, और दूसरा ‘उद्वासनीय’ कहे जाने वाले आहवनीय के उत्तर, बौ.श्रौ.सू. 9.5; आप.श्रौ.सू. 15.6.2०,21. गृह्य कृत्यों में इनकी संख्या छः होती है। इनका निर्माण ‘कर्षू’ (खरोंची गई रेखा) के दक्षिण की तरफ किया जाता है और जिस पर पितरों को पिण्ड प्रदान करने के लिए अगिन् की स्थापना की जाती हे, काल.गृ.सू. 4-6 (अन्वष्टका)
