पृष्ठभागोऽयं यन्त्रेण केनचित् काले काले मार्जयित्वा यथास्रोतः परिवर्तयिष्यते। तेन मा भूदत्र शोधनसम्भ्रमः। सज्जनैः मूलमेव शोध्यताम्।

पिप्पलम्, क्ली, (पीयते इति । पा + अलच् । पृषो- दरादित्वात् साधुः ।) जलम् । वस्त्रच्छेदभेदः । इति मेदिनी । ले, १११ ॥

पिप्पलः, पुं, (पिप्पलं जलं सिच्यमानत्वेनास्त्यस्य मूलावच्छेदे इति । पिप्पल + “अर्शआदिभ्यो- ऽच् ।” ५ । २ । १२७ । इत्यच् ।) अश्वत्थवृक्षः । (यथा, महाभारते । २ । २१ । ८ । “वनराजीस्तु पश्येमाः पिप्पलानां मनोरमाः । लोध्राणाञ्च शुभाः पार्थ ! गौतमौकःसमी- पजाः ॥”) मन्दवारे सदा नूनं लक्ष्मीरत्रागमिष्यति । अस्पृश्योऽसौ भवेत्तस्मान्मन्दवारं विना किल ॥ प्रत्यब्दमर्च्चयिष्यन्ति त्वां ज्येष्ठां गृहधर्म्मिणः । तेष्वियं श्रीः कनिष्ठा ते सदा तिष्ठत्वनामया ॥” इति पाद्मोत्तरखण्डे । १६० -- १६१ । अध्यायौ ॥ (रेवत्यां जातो मित्रस्य पुत्त्रविशेषः । यथा, भागवते । ६ । १८ । ६ । “रेतः सिषिचतुः कुम्भे उर्व्वश्याः सन्निधौ द्रुतम् । रेवत्यां मित्र उत्सर्गमरिष्ठं पिप्पलं व्यधात् ॥”)

PIPPALA II : A brahmin born of the race of Kaśyapa. Pippala did severe penance and became arrogant of the power acquired by it. Once he happened to see the eminent sage Sukarmā serving with devotion his own mother and father and that made his arrogance fade a bit. (Bhūmi Khaṇḍa, Padma Purāṇa, Chapter 61).

Pippala, n., is found in two passages of the Rigveda meaning ‘berry,’ used with a mystic signification, and in neither case with any certain reference to the berry of the fig-tree. In the Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad the general sense of ‘berry’ is not necessary, and the special sense of ‘berry’ of the Peepal is quite possible: the latter meaning is perhaps intended in the Satapatha Brāhmana. In the Atharvaveda the feminine form of the word, Pippalī, appears denoting berries used as a remedy for wounds, like Arundhatī.
