मातरिश्वन्/ मातरि--श्वन् m. ( मातरि-; prob. , " growing in the -mmother " i.e. in the fire-stick , fr. श्वि)N. of अग्निor of a divine being closely connected with him (the messenger of विवस्वत्, who brings down the hidden Fire to the भृगुs , and is identified by Sa1y. on RV. i , 93 , 6 with वायु, the Wind) RV. Born in the kula of Vainateya (Garuḍa), in the vaṁśa of Kaśyapa; feeding on serpents; marked with śrīvatsa, his deity is Viṣṇu; by action a Kṣatriya, not obtaining Brahminhood because engaged in destroying kinsmen 5. 99. 2-8.

Mātariśvan is mentioned in a Vālakhilya hymn of the Rigveda as a sacrificer along with Medhya and Pṛṣadhra. He seems to be mentioned also in one other passage, possibly in two. In the Śāṅkhāyana Śrauta Sūtra a patron, Pṛṣadhra Medhya Mātariśvan or Mātariśva is created by a misunderstanding of the Rigvedic text.
