पृष्ठभागोऽयं यन्त्रेण केनचित् काले काले मार्जयित्वा यथास्रोतः परिवर्तयिष्यते। तेन मा भूदत्र शोधनसम्भ्रमः। सज्जनैः मूलमेव शोध्यताम्।

सूत्र, त् क ग्रन्थने । इति कविकल्पद्रुमः ॥ (अदन्त चुरा०-पर०-सक०-सेट् ।) दीर्घी दन्त्यवर्गाद्य- मध्यः । वेष्टने इत्यन्ये । सूत्रयति सूत्रापयति सूत्रेण हस्तं लोकः । इति दुर्गादासः ॥

सूत्रम्, क्ली, (सूत्र्यतेऽनेनेति । सूत्रत् क ग्रन्थने + णिच् + “एरच् ।” इत्यच् । यद्वा षिव्यु तन्तु- सन्ताने + “सिविमुच्योष्टेरू च ।” उणा० ४ । १६२ । इति ष्ट्रन् । टेरू च ।) वस्त्रारम्भकम् । सूता इति भाषा । तत्पर्य्यायः । तन्तुः २ । इत्यमरजटाधरौ ॥ सूत्रतन्तुः ३ । इति भरत- धृतहारावली ॥ (यथा, रघुः । १ । ४ । “अथवा कृतवाग्दारे वंशेऽस्मित् पूर्व्व- सूरिभिः । मणौ वज्रसमुत्कीर्णे सूत्रस्येवास्ति मे गतिः ॥” यज्ञसूत्रम् । यथा, महानिर्व्वाणे । १ । ४८ । “ब्राह्मण्यचिह्नमेतावत् केवलं सूत्रधारणम् ॥”) व्यवस्था । शास्त्रादिसूचनाग्रन्थः । इति मेदिनी ॥ सूत्रलक्षणं यथा, -- “स्वल्पाक्षरमसन्दिग्धं सारवद्विश्वतोमुखम् । अस्तोभमनवद्यञ्च सूत्रं सूत्रविदो विदुः ॥” इति मुग्धबोधटीकायां दुर्गादासः ॥ (कारणम् । निमित्तम् । यथा, भागवते । ४ । ६ । ४३ । त्वमेव धर्म्मार्थदुघाभिपत्तये दक्षेण सूत्रेण ससर्ज्जिथाध्वरम् ॥”)

सूत्र¦ n. (-त्रं)
1. A thread in general.
2. A rule, a precept, in morals or science; a short, obscure, and technical sentence, enjoying some observance in law or religion, or intimating some rule in grammar, logic, &c.; in each case it is the fundamental and primitive part of Hindu learning, and is the form in which the works of the early and supposed inspired writers appear; the ingenuity and labour of subsequent authors having expanded and explained the original Su4tras in various commentaries and glosses.
3. An opinion or decree, (in law.)
4. A string, a collection of threads, as that worn by the three first classes, &c.
5. The string or wire of a puppet.
6. A fibre. E. षिव् to sew, ष्ट्रन् Una4di aff., and इव changed to ऊ; or सूत्र to string, अच् aff.

The sacred thread or sacrificial cord worn by members of the first three classes; शिखासूत्रवान् ब्राह्मणः Tarka K.; विप्रत्वे सूत्रमेव हि Bhāg.12.2.3.

The string or wire of a puppet.

A short rule or precept, an aphorism.

A short or concise technical sentence used as a memorial rule; it is thus defined: स्वल्पाक्षरमसंदिग्धं सारवद् विश्वतोमुखम् । अस्तोभमनवद्यं च सूत्रं सूत्रविदो विदुः.

Any work or manual containing such aphoristic rules; e. g. मानवकल्पसूत्र, आपस्तम्बसूत्र, गृह्यसूत्र &c.

perseverance, energy. -तर्कुटी a distaff, spindle. -दरिद्र a. 'poor in threads', having a small number of threads, thread-bare; अयं पटः सूत्रदरिद्रतां गतः Mk.2.9.

धरः, धारः 'the threadholder', a stage-manager, the principal actor who arranges the cast of characters and instructs them, and takes a prominent part in the Prastāvanā or prelude; he is thus defined: नाट्यस्य यदनुष्ठानं तत् सूत्रं स्यात् सबीजकम् । रङ्गदैवतपूजाकृत् सूत्रधार इति स्मृतः ॥

सूत्र n. a short sentence or aphoristic rule , and any work or manual consisting of strings of such rules hanging together like threads (these सूत्रworks form manuals of teaching in ritual , philosophy , grammar etc. : e.g. in ritual there are first the श्रौत-सूत्रs , and among them the कल्प-सूत्रs , founded directly on श्रुतिSee. ; they form a kind of rubric to Vedic ceremonial , giving concise rules for the performance of every kind of sacrifice [ IW. 146 etc. ] ; other kinds of -S श्रुतिworks are the गृह्य-सूत्रs and सामयाचारिकor धर्म-सूत्रs i.e. " rules for domestic ceremonies and conventional customs " , sometimes called collectively स्मार्त-सूत्रs [as founded on स्मृतिor " tradition " See. स्मार्त] ; these led to the later धर्मशास्त्रs or " law-books " [ IW. 145 ] ; in philosophy each system has its regular text-book of aphorisms written in सूत्रs by its supposed founder [ IW. 60 etc. ] ; in व्याकरणor grammar there are the celebrated सूत्रs of पाणिनिin eight books , which are the groundwork of a vast grammatical literature ; with Buddhists , पाशुपतs etc. the term सूत्रis applied to original text books as opp. to explanatory works ; with जैनs they form part of the दृष्टिवाद) IW. 162 etc.

Sūtra has the sense of ‘thread’ in the Atharvaveda and later. In the sense of a ‘book of rules’ for the guidance of sacrificers and so forth, the word occurs in the Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad.
