पृष्ठभागोऽयं यन्त्रेण केनचित् काले काले मार्जयित्वा यथास्रोतः परिवर्तयिष्यते। तेन मा भूदत्र शोधनसम्भ्रमः। सज्जनैः मूलमेव शोध्यताम्।

मेथिः, पुं, (मेथन्ते पशवोऽत्रेति । मेथ सङ्गे + “सर्व्वधातुभ्य इन् ।” उणा० ४ । ११७ । इति इन् ।) खले पशुबन्धनार्थन्यस्तदारु । मेइ काठ इति भाषा । यथा, -- “मेधिर्मेथिः खलेवाली खले गोबन्धदारु यत् ।” इति हेमचन्द्रः । ३ । ५५८ ॥ (स्त्री, मेथिका । तत्पर्य्यायो यथा, -- “मेथिका मेथिनी मेथिर्दीपनी बहुपत्रिका । बोधिनी बहुबीजा च ज्योतिर्गन्धफला तथा ॥ वल्लरी चन्द्रिका मन्था मिश्रपुष्पा च कैरवी ।” इति भावप्रकाशस्य पूर्ब्बखण्डे प्रथमे भागे ॥ क्वचित् मेथीति पाठो दृश्यते ॥)

1. A pillar in the centre of a threshing floor, round which the cattle turn to tread out the corn.

Methi is found in the Atharvaveda denoting ‘post.’ The word is also found in the marriage ritual, when the sense is, according to the St. Petersburg Dictionary, a post to support the pole of a chariot. In one passage of the Rigveda it is perhaps used of posts forming a palisade. In the Pañcaviṃśa Brāhmaṇa it appears in the form of Methī to denote the post to which the sacrificial cow is tied. The word is very variously spelt, Medhi and Meṭhī also being found.
