वन, उ म व्यापृतौ । इति कविकल्पद्रुमः । (भ्वा०- पर०-अक०-सेट् । उदित्त्वात् क्त्वावेट् ।) उ, वनित्वा वत्वा । म, प्रवनयति । मित्त्वेऽपि अस्य ञौ ज्वलह्वलेत्यादिना केवलस्य ह्रस्ववि- कल्पनात् सोपसर्गस्यैव नित्यं ह्रस्वः । वनयति वानयति । व्यापृतिर्व्यापारः । अयन्तु कगेवत् क्रियामात्र इत्यन्ये । इति दुर्गादासः ॥

वन, कि उपकृतिश्रद्धाघातशब्दोपतापेषु । इति कविकल्पद्रुमः ॥ (चुरा०-पक्षे भ्वा०-पर०-सक०- अक० च-सेट् ।) कि, वानयति वनति । अयं कैश्चिन्न मन्यते । इति दुर्गादासः ॥

वनम्, क्ली स्त्री, (वनतीति । वन् + पचाद्यच् । यद्वा, वन्यते सेव्यते इति । “पुंसि संज्ञायां घः प्रायेण ।” ३ । ३ । ११८ । इति घः ।) बहुवृक्ष- युक्तस्थानम् । (यथा, मनुः । ८ । ३५६ । “परस्त्रियं योऽभिवदेत्तीर्थेऽरण्ये वनेऽपि वा । बदीनां वापि सम्भेदे ससंग्रहणमाप्नुयात् ॥” स्त्रियान्तु यथा, साहित्यदर्पणे आर्थिव्यञ्जना- याम् । “कालो मधुः कुपित एष च पुष्पधन्वा धीरा वहन्ति रतिखेदहराः समीराः । केलीवनीयमपि वञ्जुलकुञ्जमञ्जु द्दूरेपतिः कथय किं करणीयमद्य ॥”) तत्पर्य्यायः । अटवी २ अरण्यम् ३ विपिनम् ४ गहनम् ५ काननम् ६ । इत्यमरभरतौ ॥ दावः ७ दवः ४ अटविः ९ भीरुकम् १० झाटम् ११ गुहिनम् १२ । इति शब्दरत्ना- वली ॥ शत्रम् १३ समजम् १४ प्रान्तरम् १५ विक्तम् १६ ॥ इति जटाधरः ॥ कान्तारम् १७ । इति राजनिर्घण्टः ॥ * ॥ गृहसमीपकर्त्तव्यवनं यथा, -- “शिविराभ्यन्तरे भद्रा स्थापिता तुलसी नृणाम् । धनपुत्त्रप्रदात्री च पुण्यदा हरिभाक्तिदा । प्रभाते तुलसीं दृष्ट्वा स्वर्णदानफलं लभेत् ॥ मालती यूथिका कुन्दं माधवी केतकी तथा । नागेश्वरं मल्लिका च काञ्चनं वकुलं शुभम् ॥ अपराजिता च शुभदा तेषामुद्यानमीप्सितम् । पूर्व्वे च दक्षिणे चैव शुभदं नात्र संशयः ॥” इति ब्रह्मवैवर्त्ते श्रीकृष्णजन्मखण्डे १०२ अध्यायः ॥ मथुरायां द्बादश वनानि यथा, -- “रम्यं मधुवनं नाम विष्णुस्थानमनुत्तमम् । तद्दष्ट्वा मनुजो देवि सर्व्वान् कामानवाप्नुयात् ॥ वनं तालवनञ्चैव द्वितीयं वनमुत्तमम् । तत्र स्नात्वा नरो देवि कृतकृत्यो हि जायते ॥ तृतीयं कुमुदं नाम वनं चैवोत्तमं तथा । तत्र गत्वा नरो देव्रि कृतकृत्यो हि जायते ॥ एकादशी कृष्णपक्षे मासि भाद्रपदे हि या । तत्र स्नातो नरो देवि रुद्रलोके महीयते ॥ चतुर्थं काभ्यकवनं वनानां वनमुत्तमम् । तत्र गत्वा नरो देवि मम लोके महीयते ॥ विमलस्य च कुण्डे तु सर्व्वैः पापैः प्रमुच्यते । यस्तु प्रमुञ्चते प्राणान् मम लोकं स गच्छति ॥ पञ्चमं बहुलवनं वनस्थानमनुत्तमम् । तत्र गत्वा नरो देवि अग्निस्थानं स गच्छति ॥ यमुनायाः परे पारे देवानामपि दुर्लभम् । अस्ति भद्रवनं नाम षष्ठं वनमनुत्तमम् ॥ तत्र गत्वा तु वसुधे मद्भक्तो मत्परायणः । तद्वनस्य प्रभावेण नागलोकं स गच्छति ॥ सप्तमन्तु वनं भूमे खादिरं लोकविश्रुतम् । तत्र गत्वा नरो भद्रे मम लोकं स गच्छति ॥ महावनं चाष्टमन्तु सदैव तु मम प्रियम् । तस्मिन् स्नात्वा तु मनुजो इन्द्रलोके मही- यते ॥ लोहजं धवलं नाम लोहजङ्घेन रक्षितम् । नवमन्तु वनं देवि महापातकनाशनम् ॥ वनं विल्ववनं नाम दशमं देवपूजितम् । तत्र गत्वा तु मनुजो ब्रह्मलोके महीयते ॥ एकादशन्तु भाण्डीरं योगिनां प्रियमुत्तमम् । तस्य दर्शनमात्रेण नरो गर्भं न गच्छति । भाण्डीरं समनुप्राप्य वनानां वनमुत्तमम् ॥ वासुदेवं ततो दृष्ट्वा पुनर्जन्म न विद्यते ॥ वृन्दावनं द्वादशमं वृन्दया परिरक्षितम् । मम चैव प्रियं भूमे महापातकनाशनम् ॥ वृन्दावनन्तु गोविन्दं ये पश्यन्ति वसुन्धरे । न ते यमपुरं यान्ति वैकुण्ठं प्राप्नुयुर्नराः ॥” इति वाराहे मथुरातीर्थवनद्वादशकवर्णनं नामाध्यायः ॥ * ॥ वनविशेषे मरणफलं यथा, -- “यदेवं कथितं पुण्यं मया ब्रह्ममुखाच्च्युतम् । तत् समग्रं भवेत्तस्य अरण्येषूषरेषु च ॥ अरण्यानि प्रवक्ष्यामि तथा चैवोषराणि च । सैन्धवं दण्डकारण्यं नैमिषं कुरुजाङ्गलम् ॥ उपलावृतमारण्यं जम्बूमार्गोऽथ पुष्करम् । हिमवासस्ततोऽरण्य उत्तमः परिकीर्त्तितः ॥ नवष्वेतेष्वरण्येषु यस्तु प्राणान् परित्यजेत् । ब्रह्मलोकातिथिर्भूत्वा स याति परमं पदम् ॥” इति देवीपुराणे अरण्योषरप्रशंसा ॥ * ॥ अरण्ये वर्णनीयानि यथा, -- “अरण्येऽहिवराहेभयूथसिंहादयो द्रुमाः । शुककाककपोताद्या भिल्लभल्लदवादयः ॥” उद्याने वर्णनीयानि यथा, -- “उद्याने सरणिः सर्व्वफलपुष्पलताद्रुमाः । प्रिकालिकेकिहंसाद्याः क्रीडावाप्यध्वग- स्थितिः ॥” इति कविकल्पलतायाम् १ स्तवके ३ कुसुमम् ॥ (शङ्कराचार्य्यशिष्यस्य हस्तामलकस्य शिष्या- णामुपाधिविशेषे, पुं । यदुक्तं प्राणतोषिण्या- मवधूतप्रकरणे । “सुरम्ये निर्झरे देशे वने वासं करोति यः । आशापाशविनिर्मुक्तो वननामा स उच्यते ॥”)

(1) In the forest there were holy and very attractive āyatanas of Vasus, Marudgaṇas, the two Aśvins, Vaivasvata, Āditya, Kubera (dhaneśvarasya), Indra, Viṣṇu, Savitṛ, Vibhu (?), Bhaga, Candra, Sūrya, Varuṇa (pater apām), Sādhyagaṇa, Dhātṛ, Pitṛs, Rudra and his Gaṇas, Sarasvatī, Siddhas, Pūṣan, and other gods (tato vasūnāṁ…pūṣṇaś ca ye cāpy amarās tathānye/puṇyāni cāpyāyatanāni teṣāṁ dadarśa rājā sumanoharāṇi) 3. 118. 11-13.
