पृष्ठभागोऽयं यन्त्रेण केनचित् काले काले मार्जयित्वा यथास्रोतः परिवर्तयिष्यते। तेन मा भूदत्र शोधनसम्भ्रमः। सज्जनैः मूलमेव शोध्यताम्।

धनिष्ठा, स्त्री, (अतिशयेन धनवती । धन + इष्ठन् + टाप् ।) अश्विन्यादिसप्तविंशतिनक्षत्रान्तर्गत- त्रयोविंशनक्षत्रम् । तत्पर्य्यायः । श्रविष्ठा २ । इत्यमरः । १ । ३ । २२ ॥ वसुदैवता ३ । इति ज्योतिषम् ॥ भूतिः ४ निधानम् ५ धनवती ६ । इति जटाधरः ॥ अस्याः स्वरूपं यथा, -- “मस्तकोपरि समागते धने मर्द्दलाकृतिनि पञ्चतारके । यान्ति कान्तिमति मेषलग्नतः सारसाक्षिरसघस्रलिप्तिकाः ॥” इति कालिदासकृतरात्रिलग्ननिरूपणम् ॥ तत्र जातस्य फलम् । “आचारजातादरचारुशीलो धनाधिशाली बलवान् दयालुः । यस्य प्रसूतौ च भवेद्धनिष्ठा महत्प्रतिष्ठासहितो नरः स्यात् ॥” इति कोष्ठीप्रदीपः ॥

धनिष्ठा¦ f. (-ष्ठा) The twenty-fourth Nakshatra or lunar mansion, it com- prises four stars, and is figured by a drum or tabor. E. धन to produce, (as corn,) affix अच् and मतुप् added, धनवत् again, इष्ठन् added, and मतुप् rejected, fem. affix टाप्।

Dhaniṣṭhā  : f. (sg., pl.): Name of a nakṣatra.


A. Computation of time began with it: When the Abhijit nakṣatra dropped down from the sky and Indra was confused in calculating time, Brahman ordained that time (kāla = yuga) began with Dhaniṣṭhā, whereas formerly it began with Rohiṇī (dhaniṣṭhādis tadā kālo brahmaṇā parinirmitaḥ/rohiṇyādyo 'bhavat pūrvam) 3. 219. 10 (Nī. on Bom. Ed. 3. 230. 10: yasya nakṣatrasyādyakṣaṇe candrasūryagurūṇāṁ yogas tad yugādinakṣatram/tac ca pūrvaṁ rohiṇy abhūt/tadā 'bhijitpatanakāle tu ekanyūnair ahorātrair bhagaṇasya bhogāt kṛtayugādinakṣatraṁ dhaniṣṭhaivābhad ity arthaḥ).


B. Religious rites:

(1) Nārada told Devakī (13. 63. 2-4) that if one, with composed mind, gave a cart, yoked with bulls and filled with garments and food (?) under the constellation Dhaniṣṭhā he, in the next life, instantly attained kingdom (goprayuktaṁ dhaniṣṭhāsu yānaṁ dattvā samāhitaḥ/ vastraraśmidharaṁ sadyaḥ pretya rājyam prapadyate) 13. 63. 29;

(2) Yama told Śaśabindu (13. 89. 1) that if one offered a kāmya śrāddha under the Dhaniṣṭhā (dhaniṣthāyām) he obtained a share in kingdom and did not meet with difficulties 13. 89. 12.
