सविता, [ऋ] पुं, (सूते लोकादीनिति । सू + तृच् ।) सूर्य्यः । इत्यमरः । १ । ३ । ३१ ॥ (यथा, कुमारे । ५ । २० । “विजित्य नेत्रप्रतिघातिनीं प्रभा- मनन्यदृष्टिः सवितारमैक्षत ॥”) तस्य व्युत्पत्तिर्यथा, -- “धीशब्दवाच्यो ब्रह्माणं प्रचोदयति सर्व्वदा । सृष्ट्यर्थं भगवान् विष्णुः सविता स तु कीर्त्तितः ॥ सर्व्वलोकप्रसवनात् सविता स तु कीर्त्त्यते । यतस्तद्देवता देवी सावित्रीत्युच्यते ततः ॥” इति वह्निपुराणे गायत्त्रीकल्पो नामाध्यायः ॥ अर्कवृक्षः । इति चामरः । २ । ४ । ८० ॥

SAVITĀ : One of the twelve sons of Kaśyapaprajāpati by his wife called Aditi. These sons are called Ādityas. So, Savitā also is one of the Dvādaśādityas. Viṣṇu, Śakra, Aryamā, Dhātā, Tvaṣṭā, Pūṣā, Vivasvān, Savitā, Mitra, Varuṇa, Aṁśu and Bhaga are the Dvādaśā- dityas.

Pṛśnī, wife of Savitā, gave birth to three daughters called Sāvitrī, Vyāhṛti and Trayī and three sons called Agnihotra, Paśusoma and Cāturmāsya the great sacrifices. (Viṣṇu Purāṇa, Part 1, Chapter 15).
